Does A Bailout for the Porn Industry Mean A Happier America?

Should we bail out pornography?

Should we bail out pornography?

As you’ve probably heard, Larry Flynt of Hustler Magazine and Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild, on behalf of the porn industry are requesting a $5 billion bailout plan. They claim that they are just as entitled as the Big Three  (car companies) and Wall Street stating that supporting the porn industry will go a long way in improving the depressive attitudes of the American people.  Flynt said in a statement to the media that Americans were too depressed to have sex and that this was unhealthy for the nation. He believes that a bailout plan for the porn industry would help to revive the nation’s libido. This begs the question then, is a bailout plan for the porn industry going too far?

It is obvious that Flynt and Francis believe that the porn industry has a lot to do with the American’s choice of whether or not to have sex. This may come as a surprise to them, but Americans were having sex long before watching porn or using sex toys became as prevalent as they are today. To claim that assisting the porn industry would increase the amount of sex that people are having is a bit ridiculous. Despite the numerous blackberries, i-phones and HD-TVs we now have, it has not affected our ability to use our imaginations on an object we lust. Porn really only plays a supplemental role in our sex lives. When it comes down to it, porn plays a bigger role in masturbation than in actual sexual intercourse. Are Larry and Joe telling us that we need to masturbate in order to be happy? If that’s what they’re selling, they’ll need more than luck to convince the government to take them seriously.

The $5billion being requested may not be entirely necessary either. Joe Francis said in an interview with TMZ that the request was merely a precautionary measure as the industry has not hit rock bottom as yet. Declines, however, are being seen in the decreasing number of DVDs being sold and the increasing amount of persons seeking free and pirated porn on the internet. Now really, whether you’re a fan of porn or not, do you want to see your government turn over money to help preserve the local sex shop and the Ecstasy channel?

The pornography industry is a self-contained, private industry that produces no real benefit for the general American economy. They defend their right to be bailed out on the claim that more porn would make Americans happier and healthier. In a time of serious economic depression, do you have space in your budget for porn subscriptions and sex toys? Are you convinced that more porn is what will help you out of your depression because your mortgage is owed and your credit card is overdrawn?

A bailout for porn will help no one but those in the porn industry which accounts for a measly minority of the American population. Imagine, you can’t send your kid to college or support your 401K plan but you can rest easy knowing that when you get home, Playboy will be there waiting on you.  Really now, Messrs. Flynt and Francis?!!
