Beach Retirement

By Boomeryearbook.com

As the time to retire draws near it is important to begin to think about whether or not you are going to relocate after retirement. The decision is one that must be thought about carefully, considering factors such as affordable cost of living, available and affordable healthcare, safety, and social activities that you are interested in. People have many ideas of the best places to retire. Here are the five places that continue to make the list for the best places for Baby Boomers to retire.

The List

North Carolina – North Carolina is best known for the breath taking view of the Smoky Mountains and small town atmosphere. What some do not know about is the affordable housing and rich cultural environment. You can spend your days visiting the many sites, activities, and shopping and your evenings watching football or out on the town dining in restaurants. The weather is always pleasant, and you can even plan a vacation within the state. Everything is at your fingertips and the sense of community makes you feel right at home. Recommended towns include Asheville, Greenville, and Charlotte.

Florida- Everyone knows that Florida will be on every best retirement place list and it’s the place we hear the most about when it comes to that subject. The reason it is so popular is because of the great weather, famous beaches, and its reasonable-priced housing. You can choose upscale housing, right on the beach and there is also the choice of more affordable housing that is still walking distance from the beach. There is so much to see and do in Florida, especially with the fact that it has Disney World. Most towns in Florida are safe and have low crime rates. Some recommended towns are Sarasota, Tallahassee, and Port Charlotte.

Panama – If you want to get out of the states and settle somewhere different Panama is a great choice. It offers affordable housing, great weather conditions, and beautiful scenery. Aside from affordable housing cost of living is much lower than it is here, building a home would cost you less than you can imagine. They do use American dollars and the lifestyle is much healthier. There are lots to do to occupy your days and so many places to visit you will never be bored.

San Francisco, CA – Here is a place for the city girl/guy who can not imagine living in the country. San Francisco is spotlighted because not everywhere in California would be suited for retired baby boomers, but this city has the right balance to make the list. Now it also must be said that living in the city is not cheap and so you would have to be prepared to pay a pretty penny for housing. But to those who can afford it the weather is pleasant and the activities are endless. Not ready to sit back and relax too much? San Francisco is the place for you.
Arizona – Arizona is the place for nature lovers. If you enjoy sleeping under the stars and having adventures in your backyard this place is perfect. The weather is always warm and there are many housing opportunities for those moving into the area. There are, also, many different communities to choose from. They have the city, the suburbs, and active adult communities.

Arizona is a great place for those looking for variety and lots and lots of space.
Packing up and moving may seem like a daunting venture, but moving to a new town can be exciting and provides lots of opportunity for you to explore new surroundings

Boomers, Say Goodbye To The Turkey Neck!

Non-Invasive Thermage Treatment

Non-Invasive Neck Lifts are Here!!

By Boomeryearbook.com

As a child, you may have watched in horror and amusement as the neck of your ‘very old’ schoolteacher jostled about as she scolded you for something or other. A couple years later (almost a lifetime if you will admit it), you scream in horror as you look at your own neck bouncing about in the mirror. You no longer have to pinch the skin under your chin; its elasticity has retired to some other part of your body.

You need a neck lift, but you really are not a fan of going under the knife. The process of recovery and bruising and outpatient care isn’t the least bit attractive. Well, here’s the scoop you’ve been waiting for: non-invasive procedures that actually make a significant difference in your appearance.

If you’re thinking that it’s time to take the steps, here are a few options you should explore:

· Therma-Laser Lift: This is a procedure that incorporates the pulsed light of a laser with radio-frequencies. Relatively new, it is becoming increasingly popular as it not only helps your body to produce collagen thereby tightening the skin but it also improves the skin’s texture by reducing redness, blotchiness and those brown age spots. There is no bruising or bleeding and best of all the system uses smart software that customizes the treatment for your specific skin cells. Pretty smooth right?

· Titan Face/Neck Lift: This procedure is probably the one with the most long-lasting results. It works by contracting the skin’s collagen using light directed on precise areas, while simultaneously cooling the area. Redness, scarring and bruising is minimal and very rarely occur, and the doctors claim that there is virtually no down-time. What is remarkable about the Titan lift is that it encourages the skin to keep producing collagen over a long period thus keeping the skin fresh and renewed time and time again. That’s what you call an investment worth paying for!

· Thermage: This is a product/procedure made popular by ‘Oprah’ that uses radio-frequency energy to stimulate new collagen production. The fine lines and wrinkles decrease over time as new collagen is made in your skin, while tightening and contracting making your jowls virtually disappear. Bruising is minimal and there is relatively no scarring or recovery time. This is perhaps the most natural-looking change. Watch as your face literally grows younger!

· Thread lift: This may make you cringe, but New Yorkers swear by it. Small threads are inserted under your chin, they have a special feature that allows them to expand and then draw the skin together around them so that it results in dramatic tightening of the area. Pain is reduced by cooling the area during the insertion and many persons return to their normal routine the very day of the procedure.

Non-invasive procedures are becoming more and more popular as Boomers shy away from going under the knife for ‘non-essential’ surgery. Complications with scarring and the long road to recovery are also major deterrents to having cosmetic surgery. With the busy lives we lead, a procedure that can produce the needed benefit without too much of a setback is perfect! What could be better than firm, youthful skin in a day without the pain of the knife? After all, it’s just the turkey neck we want gone, you’ve still got good use for the rest of your body.

Have you had any of the procedures or thinking of getting one done? Tell us at BoomerYearbook.

The Spinning Girl Illusion

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Right Brain Left Brain or a Whole Brain Genius
By Boomeryearbook.com

Would you consider yourself “left brained” or “right brained”, analytic and detail oriented or artistic, using spatial perception? There are many tests used to try and discover a person’s dominant hemishpere. Visual illusions are one of the popular tests used to tell how our brain processes visual information. This illusion is called the spinning girl illusion and the trick is to discern in what direction she is spinning, clockwise or counter clockwise.
The Test (click picture to see)
When first looking at the illusion many have said that it looks as if the girl is spinning counter clockwise, however after observing more it then looks like she is spinning counter clockwise. It is even possible to see her spinning in both directions. (Try it!) One minute you see her spinning clockwise and in a split second it looks counter clockwise. In actuality, the girl is not spinning in a specific direction. The picture is really a two-dimensional image shifting back and forth! Our brains interpret the world as three dimensional and so our visual processing immediately interprets this image as such.
The Debate
This test, along with many other, claim to be able to tell whether you are left brained or right brained. The two terms refer to which hemishpere of your brain is dominant. Someone could be considered “right brained” if they use symbols and images more to represent things, take risks, are philosophical, and use their imagination in every aspect of life. Someone who is considered “left brained” is very detail and fact oriented, strategic, practical, and safe.
The debate of whether or not someone can be considered solely left or right brained has been around many years. Neurologists have concluded that it is not so. Yes, we do have two brain hemispheres that are capable of working independently of each other. They can, also, specialize in different abilities, but they work together as a whole for you to function optimally. It, therefore, would not be accurate to say that someone’s personality or abilties is due to the fact that they are “more” of one hemishpere than the other.
The Final Answer
Optical illusions such as this one are fun, entertaining, and great to send to friends; however, they are not accurate portrayal of hemishperic dominance. Neither can they give you a personalilty profile. If you really want to find out which hemispere you use the most just think about your everyday life and how you function. All you need is a list of what each hemisphere specializes in and you can figure it out yourself! Have fun!

Interesting, isn’t it? So, which way do you see her spin? For all those who want to learn the trick of how to make her go in whatever direction you want, sign onto Boomeryearbook and ask Dr. Karen to show you how.

Baby Boomers and Real Estate Retirement

Thursday, January 15th, 2009
Retirement Community Home

Retirement Community Home

By Boomeryearbook.com

There is a strong connection between baby boomers and real estate? Earlier on, the baby boomer generation preferred larger houses and having their kids enjoy large backyard playgrounds. But as they are aging and becoming empty nesters, boomers seem to be looking to downsize and downplay additional home maintenance; preferring to spend their time on volunteering, socializing, eating out and other away from home activities. Boomers prefer the convenience of delivery and short travel to restaurants and coffee shops. Thus, the days of boomers living in McMansions is over and they are opting for condominiums, town houses, carriage homes, and no maintenance single-family dwellings. Apart from low maintenance, boomers are also considering safety as a prime real estate motivator. As boomer Michelle S. said, “I want to live where no one knows that I am gone for days and I don’t have to leave the house locked and then worry about it all the time.” The pundits believe that history is repeating itself and indeed the baby boomers are driving the current real estate market.

Baby boomers are very sophisticated buyers; in that they are well educated, self indulgent and clear about likes and dislikes. While wanting smaller dwellings, boomers are still demanding amenity and comfort enjoyed in a large home; and boomers can afford it. They are well traveled and experienced about trends, options and personal desires. To tap into this market, it is essential that builders understand what kinds of housing boomers actually want. And the savvy builder is proactively foreseeing the market trends evidenced by the rage of new low maintenance “55 plus” housing construction.

Additionally, along with baby boomers, single professionals are also closely scrutinizing and choosing low maintenance housing options.

But as boomers opt for downsized housing what will happen to their large family homes? With dipping financial markets, and changing trends, we are facing a huge housing crises making it difficult for boomers to recover the amount of money had hoped for from the sale of large family homes. In the 1990s, baby boomers watched housing prices double and triple and now today’s market is witnessing dramatic drops and possible financial losses. Today’s younger generation of home buyers are planning smaller families and seeking smaller housing accommodations, and the world economic crisis is impacting the size home purchase of immigrants even with large families. What can be a relief for baby boomers is the availability of small houses for reasonable prices. But with almost everyone hunting down these “low maintenance gems” the effects of supply and demand may further prevent boomers from reaping the hoped for profits from their home sales.

So what’s in store for baby boomers? We are the generation that shook things up in the 60s and we should not be counted as down and out. We are more fit and more resourceful than our predecessors, and if necessary we will postpone retirement or maybe even start new careers; keeping the real estate market alive and progressing. Possibly it is not what we boomers had anticipated, but we are flexible and resourceful and will take every measure necessary to ensure our financial stability. With the economic downturn hitting everyone, it would not be surprising if it is the baby boomers who navigate the way out of the mess; maybe especially in the real estate sector.

Luxurious Las Vegas

Fabulous Las Vegas

Fabulous Las Vegas

By Barbara Stitzer for Boomeryearbook.com

My father was in WWI!, and watched so many people that he was in charge of die in combat that he swore that he’d never be in charge of any one ever again, so he became a starving award winning insurance salesman. We’d drive out to Vegas from Lakewood, California every single weekend until I was a teenager, stay at his friend, Doc Bailey’s Hacienda Hotel, where my parents would drop me off so that Dad would play blackjack until he doubled his salary, and then we’d go home. Sometimes it would take two hours, sometimes I barely made it back to school on Monday, and sitting by myself in that dingy hotel room made me hate Las Vegas with a passion. Buzz, a Midwest boy, hadn’t been to Vegas, and he had that “stars in your eyes” look on his face that resigned me to not letting him down, so I prepared a special trip for him.

The place to stay in Las Vegas is Bellagio. If you book a regular room through your American Express Platinum card, they will upgrade you to a suite with a fountain view if it’s available, which is a wonderful thing, because all night long, the fountain dances to music that you can hear from your am/fm/ cd player in the bedroom. The fountains are great from the street side, but I’m not into elbowing for space in extreme weather, so sipping champagne while the lights changed and the fountains danced from our own room really did it for us. Buzz’s favorite part of the Bellagio wasn’t the opulent gardens that change with the seasons, not the magnificent Murano glass on the ceiling, not the bevy of “A”list restaurants and clubs. His favorite thing was the electric window covers. He worked them so hard and loved them so much that we had to get them for our own windows at home. Now that’s luxury.

I love all of the restaurants at Bellagio. You cannot go wrong at any restaurant in the hotel. But if you must leave, there are two outstanding dinners that I must let you know about; the first, the buffet in the Paris hotel, where every single morsel, from the coq au vin to the escargot is absolutely delectable, and doesn’t taste anything like normal buffet food.

If you have a car, or rented a Jacuzzi limo, Rosemary’s restaurant is my first choice for off-strip dining. About 20 minutes away from the strip, it’s a schlep, and when you get to the location, a strip mall, you might be cursing my name, but the food is amazing, the service impeccable, the atmosphere so romantic you’d fall in love with the UPS man if he were sitting across from you.

Experience the spa at Bellagio, shop at the Wynn or the Forum shops at Caesars Palace, get your man the most amazing shave of his live at the aptly named “Shave” in the breezeway between the Mandalay Bay and the Luxor, and, of course, try your hand at gambling. Stay on the strip to gamble, and hold on to your wallet…there’s a reason that the casinos are so well appointed…the odds are on their side!

Kaua’I part 2

Kauai Beach

Kauai Beach

By Barbara Stitzer for Boomeryearbook.com

You made it to Kaua’I and are luxuriously ensconced in either the Hyatt or Princeville Hotel leaving your wallet flapping in the wind. No Worries, Brah! Even a luxury lover likes to go check out the local flavor. If you plan to explore and rough it outside of your resort, dress in old clothes that you don’t care about. The beautiful red dirt on Kaua’I will not come out of your shoes, socks or clothes. And no matter how careful you are, you’ll be covered in it. So bring clothes and shoes that will allow you to dig in and get dirty, and then toss before you go back to the Mainland…notice I said Mainland, and not back to the United States. Hawai’I has been a state for almost 60 years, and nothing will make you feel more unwelcome than your saying it isn’t so with locals in ear shot. Most of the great parts of Kaua’I are unmarked, hard to find and totally worth it once you do. My favorite thing to visit close to Poipu is Glass Beach, a totally unmarked slice of nowhere in an industrial area of Hanapepe. It used to be the island dump, where they would burn all of their trash and then send it out to sea, but hurricanes brought back the little glass and pottery pieces, and the surf tosses them up on the beach where they glitter like diamonds. Salt pond is out there as well, and people come to farm Kaua’I’s famous pink salt known for its brine shrimp that give the salt its delectable flavor. It isn’t sold, as a rule, so if you’re lucky enough to have someone offer you some, grab it fast and run. Stop at Kipu Falls for a quick dip in pristine water…wear your hiking shoes, it’s worth it.

On your way back to the Hyatt, Go to Lapperts for Kaua’I Pie ice cream. Mr. Lappert is famous throughout Hawai’I, and after one lick, you’ll be hooked.

There are several great places to eat on Kaua’I, but my very favorite is Hamaura Saimin. Located in Lihue on a side street that you just have to find, it’s the quintessential Local’s Only spot. Order the special saimin and a stick of yakitori chicken and try not to look in the kitchen, or at the locals who are probably giving you stink eye for sitting in their restaurant, slap a huge dollop of hot mustard in the bowl and just inhale that saimin. It is a slice of heaven that will have you craving it years later.

Back up north, you absolutely must do the horseback riding at Princeville Stables. The horses fan out, not just nose to tail, and you can gallop them into a cloud and out through a rainbow. Walk across the waterfall and swim in the waterfall’s pool while your guides make you lunch. After lunch, grab your mask, fins and snorkel and drive past the buffalo farm, past the taro fields, past Hanalei to Haena, and go to the end of the road. Flop down in knee deep water and experience the most breathtaking array of exotic fish you’ll ever see north of the Great Barrier reef. Stop for a shave ice in Hanalei on the way back, or a fresh cut coconut and you’re ready to get back to your luxurious life at the Princeville Hotel.

Leaving you craving more exotic travel? Stay tuned at Boomer Yearbook.

Kauai Hawaii:The Magnificent Misunderstood Island

Thursday, January 15th, 2009
Kauai Beach

Kauai Beach

By Barbara Stitzer for Boomeryearbook.com

I was lucky enough to have lived on the most beautiful, subtle, amazing, misunderstood island in the world, and it’s right here in the United States; Kauai. I used to shoot tourist magazine covers for the four major islands of Hawaii, so I flew every day. I’d always ask my morning seatmates what they thought of Kaua’i. The answers were always extreme; either they totally got it and were mortgaging their souls to buy a slice of paradise, or they thought it was hideously boring and were on their way to bomb their travel agent’s office.

There are two luxurious places to stay on Kaua’i, the Hyatt, in sunny, happy Poipu, and The Princeville Hotel in waterfall, rainbow filled Princeville. If you can swing it, do a week at each. Don’t stay in Lihu’e, you’ll be inundated by the cruise ship yentas, and don’t stay on the East or west sides. The West side is too hot and isolated, and the East side is too windy and miserable. When you enter the Hyatt Poipu, on the South side of the island, it’s almost as if the soul of Kauai has stepped out and wrapped its arms around you. It’s so warm and inviting. The open air breakfast room has swans swimming around. Every single thing says quality and tranquility, and they teach a mean hula daily, as well. You could leave the resort, but why? Take your haku lei making class, sip a pina colada, and chill. If you want adventure, go jump off nearby Shipwrecks rock, a 45 feet of sheer terror leap that some locals take daily to clear their heads and ready them for their days. Time it right, so that the wave is coming in when you jump and make sure you keep your body ramrod straight on entry. It’s exhilarating.

You must check out the spa at the Hyatt. Get one of the utterly amazing specialty treatments and massages; they’re all worth it, and make sure not to skip the indoor/outdoor lava showers which are just the nicest little slice of heaven.

The Princeville Hotel is located on the north side of the island at the base of Mount Wai’ Oli’ Oli’, the rainiest spot in North America, so with more than 500 inches of rain a year, it’s a lush, green rainbow filled paradise. One thing that makes the Princeville Hotel so unique is its bathrooms…every bathroom has an ocean view. It has a different feel from the Hyatt….austere, classy, elegant, and dressy; a place to see and be seen. From there it’s a tiny hike to the coolest activity on the island; horseback riding to a waterfall, and a short hop to the quaint town of Hanalei.

Want to know what else to do on Kaua’i? You’ll be surprised… tune in next time.

Being Able To Balance Old and New Friendships

Friends: Discovering the new and staying connected to the old

Friends: Discovering the new and staying connected to the old

By Boomeryearbook.com

As Baby Boomers retire and decide to move to other cities they come to the realization that they will be leaving friends and family behind. For some, that alone can be a deterrent. They fear that they will not be able to live the same happy lives filled with the loved ones they are close to. But moving does not have to be the end of those relationships and finding new friends is not as hard as it may seem.  There are a number of things Boomers can do to ensure that you won’t be faced with the prospect of being lonely in your new hometown or becoming disconnected from your old friends.

Staying Connected

Moving away from the friends and family that are dear to you can cause anyone to have second thoughts. They may feel that the relationship will not be the same. The internet is one of the greatest ways to continue the friendships with those you’ve left behind. You can e-mail back and forth and send pictures and video.  Technologically hip Baby Boomers can even see them on their webcams.  If you are not computer savvy, then talking on the phone and writing letters are just as effective. It would also be great to take trips back to visit them and/or invite them to visit your new home. Staying in contact with friends and family can help you settle into your new life without feeling lonely and/or alone.

Making New Friends

For some making new friends can be as hard as moving away from the old ones. You may feel so strange and vulnerable, unsure of where to go and who to associate with. It does not have to be like that. Making new friends is a great way to settle in and find out more about your new town. A great way to start is by introducing yourself to your neighbors and getting to know who lives around you. They can introduce you to other people and places where you can meet other people. Use the local news paper as a resource to find different events that you may be interested in attending. You can even meet people in the supermarket. Just be open and inviting and finding friends will be a breeze.

No Worries

So if and when you do decide to move, remember there is no need to panic. The rest of your days should be filled with less stress and worry. It is not the end of the world if you do not know anyone at first. Remember to not forget those you’ve left behind and if you are willing to explore, you will find that in no time you will be right at home in your new town.

What have you done to forge new friendships?  Share with us at BoomerYearbook.

Does A Bailout for the Porn Industry Mean A Happier America?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
Should we bail out pornography?

Should we bail out pornography?

By Boomeryearbook.com

As you’ve probably heard, Larry Flynt of Hustler Magazine and Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild, on behalf of the porn industry are requesting a $5 billion bailout plan. They claim that they are just as entitled as the Big Three  (car companies) and Wall Street stating that supporting the porn industry will go a long way in improving the depressive attitudes of the American people.  Flynt said in a statement to the media that Americans were too depressed to have sex and that this was unhealthy for the nation. He believes that a bailout plan for the porn industry would help to revive the nation’s libido. This begs the question then, is a bailout plan for the porn industry going too far?

It is obvious that Flynt and Francis believe that the porn industry has a lot to do with the American’s choice of whether or not to have sex. This may come as a surprise to them, but Americans were having sex long before watching porn or using sex toys became as prevalent as they are today. To claim that assisting the porn industry would increase the amount of sex that people are having is a bit ridiculous. Despite the numerous blackberries, i-phones and HD-TVs we now have, it has not affected our ability to use our imaginations on an object we lust. Porn really only plays a supplemental role in our sex lives. When it comes down to it, porn plays a bigger role in masturbation than in actual sexual intercourse. Are Larry and Joe telling us that we need to masturbate in order to be happy? If that’s what they’re selling, they’ll need more than luck to convince the government to take them seriously.

The $5billion being requested may not be entirely necessary either. Joe Francis said in an interview with TMZ that the request was merely a precautionary measure as the industry has not hit rock bottom as yet. Declines, however, are being seen in the decreasing number of DVDs being sold and the increasing amount of persons seeking free and pirated porn on the internet. Now really, whether you’re a fan of porn or not, do you want to see your government turn over money to help preserve the local sex shop and the Ecstasy channel?

The pornography industry is a self-contained, private industry that produces no real benefit for the general American economy. They defend their right to be bailed out on the claim that more porn would make Americans happier and healthier. In a time of serious economic depression, do you have space in your budget for porn subscriptions and sex toys? Are you convinced that more porn is what will help you out of your depression because your mortgage is owed and your credit card is overdrawn?

A bailout for porn will help no one but those in the porn industry which accounts for a measly minority of the American population. Imagine, you can’t send your kid to college or support your 401K plan but you can rest easy knowing that when you get home, Playboy will be there waiting on you.  Really now, Messrs. Flynt and Francis?!!

Boomers: Keeping Your Job In Today’s Unstable Market

Job Search: Staying a Step Ahead

Job Search: Staying a Step Ahead

By Boomeryearbook.com

Losing your job and being replaced is a big concern for you as baby boomers during this job market crisis. All around us companies are laying off hundreds if not thousands of their employees. But sometimes departments may target the older employees because they may feel they are not “young and hip” enough for the job. In many cases, employees are let go unfairly and are replaced by others who are not as knowledgeable. No matter what the scenario, there are ways you can avoid being one the first to be laid off!

Stay Up To Date

There is so much new technology presented every year that the average baby boomer may not be aware of. It is important to stay in tune to what is new on the market and be somewhat knowledgeable of how to operate them. Also engage in professional development and training as often as possible to keep your resume looking good. Know what is going on with your company! Do not get comfortable with only knowing what you are told; research and talk to others to find out information that you can use to your benefit.

Build Healthy Relationships

Whether you have been at your job for 10 years or 10 days building relationships is very important. Make sure you know all of the supervisors, managers, clerks, and even the custodians. Once you keep those relationships on good terms you never know if in the future that person who was once a clerk will save your job. Stay humble despite your years of experience, and let no one be able to fault you for any form of insubordination or disrespect.

Take the package they offer and leave with the satisfaction that you did the best you could. It is their loss and with your skills and credentials you can find another job. Do not be bitter and angry. However, if you honestly feel that you were unfairly let go and you are willing and able to pursue making a strong case against it then by all means do so. However if deep down you know that you are not able to produce the same quality of work as you once could, then it is only right that you retire; or if you are laid off, accept your package and find another job that you will be able to keep up with. It is not the end of the world, even though it may feel like it. It is just life as we know it.

Do you have any tips on how to hold on to your job?  Come, share with us at BoomerYearbook.
