Elderly Problems: Detecting a Stroke

Elderly Problems by Boomeryearbook.com

In a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, it was found that though the elderly are most likely to suffer a stroke, they most often fail to correctly recognize the symptoms.

The same health problems that are responsible for a heart attack are also responsible for a stroke, and elderly people are more susceptible because of the elderly problems of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis and diabetes.
One of the major conditions that increase the risk of a stroke is Arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Arteriosclerosis can narrow or block the carotid arteries, which are large arteries in the neck, and cause a stroke. Elderly problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, cause arteriosclerosis of the small blood vessels inside the brain, thus escalating the risk of a stroke. However, psychological articles on elderly problems have also said that there are cases of persons who experience a stroke for no identifiable reason.
Basically a stroke occurs when an area of the brain is deprived of its blood supply; either due to a blockage or a burst blood vessel. If deprived of oxygen long enough, vital brain tissue can die, and it is essential to take immediate action. Detecting the symptoms of stroke is therefore critical, and although at times some strokes seem almost asymptomatic, (without symptoms) being able to identify stroke symptoms, as with most health related elderly problems, can help save your life!

Stroke is a major concern for anyone dealing with elderly problems. Understanding the early symptoms of the onset of a stroke can help to prevent loss of life. At Boomer Yearbook, the website for baby boomers, we are trying to assist people in understanding problems faced by our generation in the hope that it may help them better understand our aging bodies and needs.

Amongst the manifested symptoms of a stroke is paralysis or loss in sensation in one side of the body, such as the arm or leg. Loss in verbal lucidity, slurred or nonsensical speech is also a symptom. Some people are unable to swallow, have unexplained memory loss and double vision. Drooping on one side of the face is known to occur as is unexplained memory loss, severe headache and sudden mental confusion.

Although some disabilities caused by strokes are irreversible a new treatment, called thrombolysis, can reduce disability from stroke. However, it must be given within three hours of the onset of symptoms, so time is of the essence. Other common elderly problems related to medical conditions such as high blood sugar, dehydration, and hazardously elevated blood pressure may also require immediate attention. Even if the damage done by the stroke is not recoverable, it is very important to understand the cause of the stroke so future incidences can be prevented. Psychological articles and studies have shown that the sooner patients receive physical therapy and rehabilitation, the better the chances of recovery.
If a person has already suffered a stroke, more strokes can be prevented only if the cause of the previous stroke is understood. There are many treatments and preventive measures available depending upon the nature of the stroke. If it was the blockage of the carotid arteries that caused the stroke, surgery can help increase blood flow through the veins. Blood thinning medicines (anticoagulants) can help if the blockage is less severe or if blood clots have formed that might break off and travel to the brain. If high blood pressure is the cause, which tops the list of elderly problems related to health, than it should be kept in control. Also, alcoholic beverages are hazardous to those who have already suffered a stroke and should be avoided.
Strokes can be successfully treated and can also be prevented. Following a healthy diet, monitoring your blood pressure, getting regular exercise, controlling alcohol intake, and not smoking, can dramatically decrease the chances of suffering a stroke.

Healthy Eating for Preventing and Solving Elderly Problems

Healthy Foods to Prevent Elderly Problems

Elderly Problems

By Boomeryearbook.com

Improvements in medicine, science and healthcare have enabled today’s citizens to live a longer healthier life. The elderly want to retain an independent, active lifestyle and society wants to reduce the economic costs associated with the elderly problems of chronic disease and age related disability. The science of aging suggests that these elderly problems can be overcome in a great way by healthy eating.

Though healthy eating is a smart lifestyle choice for all ages it is almost essential to the well being of us aging boomers. As psychological articles explain there are a number of reasons for this, the prime ones being that as our body’s age we experience a weakening of muscle tone and increases in arthritic related conditions and bone loss. A number of basic health tips can promote healthy living and are recommended to young as well as the aging boomers.

Water

As we age, one of the most common elderly problems encountered is the body’s reduced ability to retain water. To avoid dehydration we at Boomer Yearbook, the social network website for baby boomers, recommend that you daily drink 6 glasses of water per 100 pounds of weight.

Energy

Elderly people have a lot less energy than a young person and need to supplement their daily diets with high protein, low fat foods to avoid the elderly problems of low energy levels and muscle wasting.

Carbohydrate and Fiber

Eating foods high in carbohydrates and fibers helps regulate bowel movement and prevents chronic constipation and associated diseases.

Fat

Though not entirely removed from the diet, aging boomers should reduce their processed fat intake and substitute olive oil and omega fats. Alternate cooking techniques can lessen the fat content and help avoid the elderly problems of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Iron

As we age, we also exhibit a decrease in the body’s reserves of iron. Aging boomers should not use iron supplements, particularly not menopausal baby boomer women, unless instructed by their doctors to do so, but the aging boomer generation should eat three servings or iron rich food such as liver per week to help strengthen the body.

Zinc

As we age, our bodies lessen in our ability to retain zinc. Therefore, aging boomers should supplement our diets with chicken, liver, and tuna as they provide excellent natural sources of this needed mineral.

Calcium

Since bone density decreases with age, having a source of calcium or a supplement is highly recommended in order to avoid the elderly problems of osteoporosis (especially women) and fractures due to bone weakening.

Vitamin B12

Psychological articles have reported that deficiencies of the vitamin Cobalamin is linked to memory loss, a frequent elderly problem found in 90% of the elderly population! The vitamin is naturally found in mollusks and clams and is also present, though to a lesser degree in liver.

Healthy eating now is a smart choice as caring for oneself in the present, can prevent many future elderly problems.

That’s what we at BoomerYearbook believe. What do you think?

Elderly Abuse and Neglect: Boomers Alert

Elderly Problems: Abuse and Neglect

Elderly Problems: Abuse and Neglect

Elderly Problems: By Boomeryearbook.com

Psychological articles reviewed by Boomer Yearbook inform us that as one’s quality of life increases, so does one’s life expectancy. Our population is aging rapidly and by the year 2030, the elderly population will be twice its present number. A fair amount of this growth is due to the fact that the baby boomers generation is aging, and 61 million of us will be between 64 and 86 years old by the year 2030! With the increase in the aging boomer population it is no surprise that reports of elderly problems such as abuse and neglect, have become far more prevalent, and are an incoming risk to the large aging baby boomer generation.

Types:

While there is a wide scope of issues under the umbrella term of abuse, the main categories can be summarized as follows:

Physical abuse: consists of all acts of physical violence i.e. acts carried out with the intention to inflict physical pain or injury. This includes assault, confinement, and administration of an improper type or amount of drugs.

Psychological/emotional abuse: consists of any verbal aggression that causes emotional distress. Most common are insults, humiliating comments, and threats-in elderly cases, especially those of institutionalization or abandonment.

Neglect- one of the most common of the elderly problems, consists of the failure of the caretaker to meet the needs of the elderly dependant; whether intentional or otherwise.

Financial exploitation- consists of the embezzlement of money or property. This includes the use of credit cards without consent, theft of pension checks, and the forceful changing of legal documents.

Detection:

One of the basic needs for the prevention of the abusive type of elderly problems is the ability to detect them. However, it is not easy to detect as it is usually confused with other conditions such as dementia or frailty and can be a combination of international abuse along with some natural causality.

Signs of physical abuse: usually bruises, abrasions, sprains and in severe cases fractures and burns. Also, medication taken at irregular time intervals should be carefully assessed to see if it is a symptom of an abusive situation.

Signs of psychological abuse: talking to oneself, wetting oneself, rocking, pulling or picking at one’s hair or face.

Signs of neglect- poor hygiene, soiled clothing, malnutrition or dehydration.

Signs of financial exploitation: sudden change of wills or legal documents, significant withdrawal from accounts etc.

Causes of the elderly problem of abuse

Although many caretakers have the best intentions for the care of an elderly dependant, the additional burden, stress and other factors may cause the elderly problems of abuse and neglect to arise. Similarly, the employees of health care institutions might be over worked and exhausted. The anxiety of elderly care is a significant contributor to the stemming of the elderly problems of abuse and neglect and leads to exhaustion, irritability, impatience, and the failure to resist from doing harm.

Care takers who are more susceptible to the mental and physical health problems that elderly care entails usually have anxiety, depression, substance abuse problems, and are in a bad financial situation. Likewise, certain elderly persons are more likely to be abused. These include individuals who are already timid, have dementias or the like, and have a prior history of domestic violence.

Educate yourself:

Abuse and neglect are amongst the elderly problems that the baby boomers generation should face head on as prevention is vital to the well being of the global baby boomers generation. A pro-active strategy entails education regarding the symptoms of abuse and encouraging the abused elderly to come forward and let others know what is happening. Additionally, seniors should be encouraged to develop a social network either in their neighborhoods or through an online network such as ones provided by Boomer Yearbook’s website for baby boomers.

Avoiding Alzheimer’s: A Homeopathic Viewpoint

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
Elderly Problems: Alzheimer's Disease

Elderly Problems: Alzheimer's Disease

Elderly Problems: By Boomeryearbook.com

According to psychological articles reviewed by Boomer Yearbook, a website for baby boomers, almost 4 million Americans (born between 1946-1964) suffer from the debilitating elderly problems of Alzheimer’s disease. The severity of this disease is that it strikes the brain; significantly changing who we are. Alzheimer’s usually strikes after the age of 55, (early onset), and snatches away our most important functions and pleasures; at the very time when the baby boomers should be harvesting the fruits of our well deserved labors.

It has been confirmed that Alzheimer develops quickly after the age of 55 and has a slightly slower progression when symptoms begin later in life, in the late 60s and early 70s. While in the past, memory was regarded as untreatable elderly problems, today’s modern advancements have changed this misunderstanding of memory and the aging disease process, so that we now have the ability to treat and improve the quality of life of Alzheimer’s patients. (Please check Boomer Yearbook’s section on mental and medical health updates for articles on new research and Alzheimer’s treatments.)

According to homeopathy, a small dose of the toxin, “like treats like”, naturally cures the disease. Psychological articles suggest the remedy alumina is found highly useful in treating the elderly problems of Alzheimer’s.

The homeopaths, but not allopathic physicians, claim that aluminum is the main causative agent for this disease and followers of the holistic healer Edgar Cayce instruct people to limit using aluminum in utensils, pots, pills etc. If not limited, the homeopathic community believes that the elderly problems of Alzheimer’s’ will reach epidemic proportions.

According to a study done on the baby boomers generation, good eating habits can make a big difference in lowering the risk of getting Alzheimer’s. The psychological articles say that drinking fruit and vegetable juices might be a big step forward toward avoiding elderly problems. The normal understanding of how fresh fruit might help with Alzheimer’s is that anti-oxidants helps rid the body of free charged particles, (i.e. free radicals) that form in body and damage cells .The fruit and vegetable vitamins cleans the free radical toxins and is said to stop them from doing damage. Being a fellow boomer, I strongly advise we all stay on top of this disease, and sign up, follow and comment on the series of Alzheimer related articles in Boomeryearbook, our website for baby boomers.

To treat this elderly problems, a homeopath first asks about the medical history of the patient .Then he performs mental evaluation tests by screening memory, problem-solving abilities, the persons attention span, counting skills and language. For example, homeopaths might test latest and long-term memory by asking: What day was yesterday? Or: When was World War I? Homeopaths may list familiar objects and then ask a patient to repeat them at immediately and then again after a ten minute time lapse.

The homeopath might recommend a traditional allopathic physician for Neuropsychological tests and brain scans to confirm the diagnosis; such as (CT) scans, (MR)scans and (PET) scans .By looking at a picture of the brain the doctors have an added tool to the complications of elderly problems, such as Alzheimer’s.

However, a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can only be made post mortem; using a microscopic examination of the person’s brain cells after death.
According to homeopathic experts on this most crippling of elderly problems, baby boomers should develop good eating habits, eliminate aluminum utensils and products, and should be stimulating our brains with psychological games and brain teasers to ward off the possibility of this awful disease.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Acupuncture

Baby Boomer getting acupuncture face lift

Baby Boomer getting acupuncture face lift

Elderly Problems:

By Boomeryearbook.com

Acupuncture is based on the belief that living beings have an important energy called “chi” that passes through twelve imaginary energy lines which circle around the body. Each line is linked with different parts of the body. Elderly problems can occur when there is a disruption in the flow of ‘chi”.
Acupuncturists insert needles into special points along specific relevant lines in order to bring back balance to the flow of “chi” and thus treat the elderly problem. There are more than 1000 acupuncture points in the body. This article on our website for baby boomers will summarize some advantages and disadvantages of acupuncture.
Some of the most common elderly problems include sleeplessness, persistent low back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee. Boomer Yearbook, our website for baby boomers suggests that the proportion of having back pain is significantly greater in the aging baby boomers generation than younger adults; And degenerative knee disease with the back spinal collapse is invariably one of the most common elderly problems.

One of the most important advantages of acupuncture is that as long as performed by a recognized and well trained expert, there are no contraindications or side effects. It can be easily performed on the baby boomers generation as there are no age specific restrictions to the practice of acupuncture. It can treat all elderly problems without inflicting pain; or with minimal discomfort (i.e. the soles of the feet can be quite sensitive). Psychological articles have reported that acupuncture helps improve memory and enhances the body’s resistance against infections. It can give immediate relief to the most common elderly problems like back pain, knee pain, sleeplessness and low energy. The NIH (National Institute of Health) has reported that acupuncture has reduced severe effects without negative side effects, which cannot be said for traditional allopathic medications and other medical methods adopted for treatment of these conditions. Thus, acupuncture does not pose negative risk factors for the treatment of common elderly problems.

Acupuncture needles are safe as long as they are sterilized, used once on only the one person, free of any infection, and administered by a qualified professional. Certain standards are set for acupuncture needles especially while treating elderly problems as the baby boomers generation, due to our aging, are at higher risk of catching infections.

According to the research done by Boomer Yearbook, our website for baby boomers, each session costs roughly between $ 60 to $ 80 which can be quite expensive for the retirement boomer as it is usually non-insurance “out of pocket” money. Since bone loss, arthritis, and pain conditions are common elderly problems, we feel that before embarking on a treatment of acupuncture, that we warn the baby boomers generation that it is costly and in some cases, even if performed by an licensed well trained expert, that there can be soreness and bleeding and irritation around the entry sites.

Every person reacts differently to acupuncture; And in the vast majority of well performed service, it can bring significant benefits. However, Boomer Yearbook wants to caution all baby boomers to seek a licensed practitioner, carefully observe that the needles the practitioner is using are from a sterilized “sealed” package, and be on the lookout for bleeding and bruising. The biggest negative Boomer Yearbook website for baby boomers uncovered in the psychological articles warned that improperly treating elderly problems with acupuncture could cause series infections and even organ perforation.

Have you had a negative or positive experience with acupuncture? Come tell us at BoomerYearbook.

Comic Books Of The Baby Boomers Generation

Monday, February 16th, 2009
The Baby Boomers Generation Comic Books

The Baby Boomers Generation Comic Books

By Boomeryearbook.com

During the 1960’s I, along with most of my friends, became a huge fan of comic books. My love-affair began when one day while watching “Superman” my favorite TV show, I saw a tag saying that “Superman” was actually a comic character. I just had to have one.
Watching echo boomers and grandkids pouring over the pages of a comic book brought the memories of my childhood flooding back to me. I thought it would be nice to share my recollections with fellow boomers and see what you have to say about the comic-books experience.
Some great comics from the early times of the baby boomers are summarized here:

1. Blue Beetle Bo. 5: This was created when the co-creator of Spiderman and Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko, left Marvel comics and went to join Charlton Comics for lack of a better option. The baby boomers will remember this comic as it came as a welcome addition to the comic-world at a time when there was a serious dearth of quality comic books, mediocrity being the best they could offer.

2. Star spangled War Stories No. 141: Commercial comic books saw its first most popular series with the beginning of Enemy Ace written by Robert Kanigher with illustrations by Joe Kubert. It was set in World War 1 and revolved around a German fighter who suffered from a conscience.

3. The Spectre No. 1: This was the only issue in the short life-span of 1o issues that was illustrated by the genius Murphy Anderson himself. It was produced by DC comics.

4. Showcase 85: The baby boomers will remember this comic as a masterpiece in drawing. Illustrations were given by Joe Kubert who was also the writer of the comic series. Firehair is a child who is raised by Native Americans and while growing up finds himself spurned by other White settlers.

5. Metamorpho No. 1: Ramona Fradon showed her extraordinary artistic talent in this series of comic books. She only worked on 4 issues as she took leave to raise her daughter and the later issues could at best be described as mediocre imitations of her style. The baby boomers women can proudly say she still is one of the best comic book and comic strip artist’s around with works published in Superman, Fantastic Four and Batman, just to name a few.

6. Captain Action No. 4: It only lasted 4 issues but what incredible issues these were. These were based on a toy figure as well as another one of the most popular of DC comics, Hot Wheels.

7. Lois Lane No. 71: In January of 1968, came Lois Lane trying every moronic way to trap Superman into wedlock. From jealousy to trying on potions to turn her into superwoman or a monster; Lois tries them all. The baby boomers loved them for the sheer silliness and the light-hearted story line created by Kurt Shaffenberger.

8. Superman Annual No. 1: Now this one must have been one hell of a seller with a crisp, modern front page design. I doubt any of us was able to resist it. It has stories about the secret of Lex Luthor’s baldness and tales about the Kryptonite visions of the giant ape.

9. Showcase No. 56 and 75: Showcase is the best example of comics in the 1960s. These include The Creeper and The Hawk and the Dove in addition to others.

10. Bat Lash NO. 4: Written by Sergio Aragones and co-written by Denny O’Neill this issue is brilliant. Humor galore, the characters seem true and are drawn with perfection by Nick Cardy.

11. Peanuts: Now there was no bashing for the bad guys here, no super-human feats. The characters Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, were all so easy to relate to and so much fun. We baby boomers really took a liking to these comics.

12. Sad Sack: This was another of those comics spun around the world wars, in this case the second one. Created by George Baker, it was a sort of a personal insight into the war as he was a former army sergeant. He also illustrated almost all the comics in the series.

13. Batman and Robin: Now this one everyone liked. So no surprise for seeing it here on my list. Their secret identities secretly made me wish for one too. The colorful variety of villains added to the fun. And from the popularity of today’s movies, we all recognize the timelessness of the Joker, Penguin, Cat Woman, and Poison Ivy.

14. Classics: These were novels that were adapted as comics. You could find anything from Oliver Twist and Lord Jim to The Time Machine and Frankenstein. I can safely say that my interest in reading classic literature came from these comics.

15. And of course Archie, Reggie, Betty and Veronica. These comic books were so beloved and special they deserve their own article.

The Baby Boomers’ Tips For Surviving Old Age

Elderly Problems Resolved: Happy Senior Couple

Elderly Problems Resolved: Happy Senior Couple

Solving Elderly Problems:

By Boomeryearbook.com

We all know who the baby boomers are. Just to get you started in case you are new to the term, a baby boomer is someone born anywhere between the years 1946 and 1964. It is easy to see that the estimated 35 million people who were born during this time have now aging and entering their senior years. With this has come a rise in elderly problems. The US is trying hard to find some course of action to handle this enormous rise in the over 60 population the elderly problems facing the baby boomers generation.

Now I don’t know if this is going to be seen as a challenge by you or a blessing but, it is a fact that we baby boomers are going to live longer than generations before us. Thanks to technological and scientific developments, the life expectancy has risen upwards to an average of 100 years for some women baby boomers, and 80 plus years for male baby boomers. Some psychological articles suggest that some of today’s baby boomers generation will live to be 120 years of age!
Now this calls for some major planning. Surviving for so long will call for some action and here are some tips that should see us safely through the line:

Be very careful who you choose as a mate. To be stuck with someone after retirement at the age of 65 to 70 will still mean spending at least 35 years with him/her. Now you don’t want to make a mistake there to add to your growing list of elderly problems.

Statistics show that the baby boomers have not been very good at saving. We are notorious for our ‘extravagant” spending habits and this may pose serious elderly problems. But, we baby boomers still have time. Let’s try and save up and invest wisely so we are not caught unaware. Generations before us had the luxury of quietly retiring with secure nest eggs that provided for their senior years. The baby boomers generation is not as fortunate. With the current economic crisis, we may need to continue to work well past typical boomer retirement years, or even start a new career of private business. Boomers, let’s start looking out for options now.

The above is especially true for women baby boomers. The financial security most traditional women born prior to the baby boomers, thanks to husband and/or family providers and substantial inheritances and bank balances, has eluded many of our baby boomers generation. A word to the wise boomer. There is time still. Start spending less and saving more.

Sadly, psychological articles inform us that Americans are a society of people who have forgotten to cherish and look after their elderly. This is another of our major elderly problems. We need to start looking around at the attitudes of the older generations and learn from their habits. This way we may bring about an attitude change in ourselves beginning with genuine respect for those in the senior years of life.

The baby boomers have the advantage of having lived to enter an age where staying connected with fellow boomers is not as difficult as it used to be for generations before us. Staying in touch via the Internet and cell phones is going to be a piece of cake.

The baby boomers may have some challenges but we also have many more opportunities. The question remains: will we rise to the task as we always have?

We at Boomeryearbook believe we will. What do you think?

HERE’S HOW TO FIX THE FINANCIAL CRISIS

Elderly Problems: Fixing the Economic Crisis

Elderly Problems: Fixing the Economic Crisis

By Joseph J. Kusnell

Boomeryearbook.com: Elderly Problems

Can you tell me how you can fix it so that people, who could not afford the homes they bought when they bought them, can afford them now? I’d like to know that.

These people are not suddenly going to acquire skills they never had to make them more able to get jobs that would permit them to buy the homes they just bought.

They couldn’t afford them when they bought them and that’s’ why Fannie Mae created the no-doc loans. Because they had no down payment, no work history and no credit. So we just ignored all those things and gave them the loans anyway. Now we are going to put them into a position to afford them? how?

The most recent idea is great. Reduce the principal of the mortgage. Then reduce the interest rate. Then extend the terms. Well isn’t that the same as giving the houses away. And if they don’t have jobs what difference does it make? They still can’t pay their mortgage no matter what it is. No, the plan has huge holes. But I can tell you what to do about it. And it’s not that complicated.

1. Reduce interest rates to 4.2% for new homes or refinanced homes. That will let return money to the homeowner which he can use for his mortgage or to stimulate the economy.

2. Make longer terms available for whomever wants them. Up to 40 years.

3. Rise the unemployment compensation by 25%. Find the money wherever you found the trillions you just spent. This is critical because people on unemployment can’t find jobs and if they can depend on this money, they will rebuild confidence in the economy while you try to fix the problem.

4. The key. Guarantee unemployment as long as the unemployed rate is over 5.0%. It will cost you 130 billion a year but it will stabilize the economy, allow families to function until they can find work, and will restore confidence in those who are suffering. When the unemployment rates comes down to 5.25%, letters go out warning the unemployed time is running out and they need to go find jobs. When it hits 5.0%, give them a 60 day warning and then stop the payments.

These steps while expensive are not as expensive as what you are doing and this will save the country. You see the key is you have to help those who cannot help themselves.

People in the working classes cannot work until you give them jobs. My plan will guarantee their existence until they can do so themselves. And I believe it will generate the kind of confidence and security that will help to actually turn things around. On their unemployment along with the redoing of mortgages, I think lies the answer to the real estate crisis.

Four points to my plan. And I think they will do the job.

Baby Boomer Women Kicking Elderly Problems of Menopause

Elderly Problems: By Boomeryearbook.com

We all know what menopause means biologically or technically; it’s when a woman’s monthly menstrual cycles have stopped; officially for one year. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45-55, leaving most women with many decades of life to live without pre-menopausal hormonal estrogen. While that may somehow be comforting, menopause is just as life changing as puberty in the sense that a woman’s hormones are fluctuating and ushering in a new stage of life. That’s also a problem as many women are scared of what the future may hold and filled with anxiety and misconceptions. There are more women over 50 (baby boomer women) in the world today than during any other time in history; and are apprehensive about elderly problems including menopause.

The majority of Baby boomer women are well into their menopause and many have ‘seen the other side’ by now. Many struggle with the elderly problems of asexuality. Frankly speaking, old isn’t usually equated with sexy or sex appeal, unless you are discussing aged wine and not aging women. While many baby boomer women may be economically empowered and self assured, when they hit menopause it’s as if we lose our previous confidence, or go into overdrive to compensate for the hormonal ‘losses’. What baby boomer women should recognize is that we are experiencing a change, and not to think of menopause as a loss.

I think boomers are especially worried about the elderly problems of menopause because we’ve lived a life of freedom, and our sheer numbers have dictated that society keeps up with our demands, not the other way around. This is especially true of our demand for sexual freedom, and may have implications in our strong negative reaction to menopause, as baby boomer women might be worried because menopause means that they’re now different, now aging, no longer in “sexual prime.” And let’s never forget the role of the media and the part that “image” plays in how we deal with aging. If women dutifully abandon a sexy or youthful image and then bemoan society’s wrong conception, it is our fault that we have bought into the propaganda. Childbearing powers shouldn’t be linked to sexuality. Many of us baby boomer womenlook and feel quite sexy

For baby boomer women let me offer this post menopausal advice; don’t think that life as you know it will just shift towards say, your grandchildren. I’ve been through menopause, and I grant you, it wasn’t a picnic. I was cranky, had trouble sleeping and felt very insecure. But I realized that my ‘instability’ was my body readjusting itself and tried to wrap my mind around getting through the symptoms and looking forward to the change. What happens to baby boomer women after 50? We have alternatives. We can get unnecessarily preoccupied with our loss of youth and get depressed, or we can launch into this new phase of life availing ourselves or all resources. For goodness sake ladies, we haven’t expired and no we won’t become invisible unless we let it happen. Let’s just band together in sisterhood and shed stereotypes about our sexuality that are entrapped in old opinions.

It will do us a world of good if we baby boomer women are concerned with our wellness, financial security and getting the best out of our booming postmenopausal senior years.
I for one took up Zumba, (Latin Cardio Fusion) and feel better than I have in 20 years.
I hope other baby boomer women will write me at Boomer Yearbook and let me know what worked for them.

Crumbling Health Care: Elderly Problems Alert

Crumbling Health Care: Elderly Problems Alert

by BoomerYearbook.com

Retirement boomers beware. Congress is at it again, and this time their target is the nation’s Medicare and Medicaid recipients. The economic stimulus bill passed by Congress, named H.R. 1 – the bill number reserved for the piece of legislation deemed a number one priority in the House by the Speaker – quietly highlights several specific changes that will dramatically affect retirement boomers and members of the population with typical elderly problems. Although not eligible for Medicare for a minimum of two years, the baby boomer generation will be unfortunate enough to fall under the new health and human services health plan initiative that will tie the federal government to every patient nationwide.

At greatest risk for bureaucratic dappling in the healthcare business are those with particular elderly problems, which will eventually include retirement boomers. Our friends on Capitol Hill have agreed through the approval of the President’s economic stimulus bill that federal oversight of healthcare, most notably Medicare, is the right choice for all citizens. Of primary attention for boomers in the 2009 economic stimulus bill is the electronic Health Information Technology (HIT) portion that supports the creation of electronic health records for all healthcare patients to minimize duplicate testing and reduce or eliminate errors. Both healthy retirement boomers and those retirees with elderly problems are affected by the bill’s construction. Nestled among the text regarding the efficiency of the new and improved healthcare system is the proposition of a “National Coordinator” who will essentially be the national health czar.

The proposed system will manage the national healthcare organizations. Although that seems rather insignificant on the surface, a full one-third of the nation’s healthcare is regulated by the federal government (Medicaid, Medicare, Veterans Administration, et. al). And how can this affect those with elderly problems? Physicians will be paid incentives for the “adoption and meaningful use of certified EHR technology (511).” The earlier a physician adopts the practices recommended by the National Coordinator and respective offices, the greater the incentive. Essentially, your doctor can be bought for a price by Uncle Sam.

So what does this mean to boomers in general? The bill itself is riddled with comment after comment regarding the “National Coordinator.” The head of the Department of Health and Human Services will preside over the nation’s health care system, likely imposing his ideas of reasonable care, rates, and procedures on those who are least able to tolerate what feels like a socialized approach to healthcare. Fortunately for the baby boomer generation, Senator Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for the prestigious post. Daschle’s opinions regarding healthcare and his opinions regarding federal healthcare administration are a red flag for anyone assuming private healthcare is exempt from federal influence. The bill gives the department authorization to review previous uses and impose “more stringent measures (541)” if deemed necessary. What could eventually result is a reduction or removal of certain tax benefits for those who choose to opt-out of compliance.

Retirement boomers and Medicare patients with significant elderly problems need to know that the new electronic HIT program plans to “improve(s) the coordination of care and information among hospitals, laboratories, physician offices, and other entities through an effective infrastructure for the secure and authorized exchange of health care information (442).” What exactly are these “other entities” and who is behind the “authorized exchange” many retirement boomers will be asking. According to the bill, seemingly every action taken by hospitals and physicians will be funneled through the Secretary of Health and Human Services: “to the satisfaction of the Secretary (498, 517, 540, 568).” Rather than reducing problems within the healthcare system, the stimulus bill will essentially increase them, but not for the federal government. It is the patient who will ultimately suffer.

How do you feel about the President’s economic stimulus bill? How do think you and your loved ones will be affected? Let us know at BoomerYearbook.com.
