Asking for a first date is a process that begins way before the first words are even uttered. The mechanics of the process are universal and applicable across all generations with a few exceptions. This article will concentrate on the exceptions that affect the senior boomers generation.

Offer Compliments

Offering complements is a great way to set the ball rolling. You can offer complements about one’s cooking, gardening skills among other things.

Talk to each other

If you belong to the same hobby group or attend the same church, you should make an effort to establish communication. At first, the talk need not more than just banter.

Check if your target is available

Before asking a senior boomer for a date, it is important to make sure that they are available to date.

Comfort zone

People will only agree to go out on a date if they feel comfortable around each other. Therefore, before bringing the idea of a date into focus, you should find ways and means of making the other party comfortable around you.

Plan in Advance

Senior boomers are not renowned for their spontaneous nature. Therefore, prior planning is desired when asking for a first date.

This will provide the other party with time to sort out their calendar and plan for the date.

Confirmation Call

Once arrangements for a date have been made, it is prudent to call to confirm the date details with your date to be.

Have a plan

This basically entails knowing where you will be going for the date and what you will be doing. Most senior boomers appreciate serene and tranquil environments where they can enjoy each other’s company.

Pick her up

Senior boomers were bred knowing that a gentleman should always pick up his date, pay for the date and drop her home. Anything that deviates from this norm will not go down well with a senior boomer.

3 Most Common Things You Might Want to Know About Aging

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By Boomeryearbook.com

What is Aging?

One researcher says, “The biological crystal ball is very cloudy when we come to aging. No one fully understands it”. Even so, scientists who study aging have attempted to define it by saying, “it is the chronological time that someone has existed”. But aging is more than the passing of years. One does not normally speak of an aging child because aging has a connotation of deterioration of vitality. Aging is the toll that the passing years take on an individual.

What are the possible effects of aging?

Senior depression

Depression in the aged shows up in a different way from that in younger people. Rather than manifesting itself as anguish or anxiety, such depression is “characterized by loss of cognitive abilities – memory, concentration, and thinking ability.” Aging boomers lose interest in what they used to do or what used to give them pleasure. Such symptoms are sometimes mistakenly regarded as just part of old age, yet it is very important that people have constant contact with elderly family members.

Trouble in sleeping

About 30 percent of older people complain they have trouble sleeping, yet some who think they have sleep problems may simply be experiencing the normal changes in sleep patterns that accompany aging. While a child of four sleeps an average of ten hours nightly, teenagers nine hours, and young adults seven or eight, the baby boomers normally sleep four to six hours, and many get along fine on just three or four hours each night.

How can early aging be prevented?

“People adapt houses for children. Why not adapt them for baby boomers?” asks a scientist. Besides safer homes for the elderly, they should exercise to strengthen the muscular system in order to reduce the risk of falling. One should get rid of the early aging enemies that include a sedentary way of life, unbalanced nutrition (especially diets rich in fat), smoking, excessive use of alcoholic beverages, stress, and lack of sleep. Extreme stress weakens the immune system which is intimately related to the onset of various diseases and consequently also of old age.

Do you know any secret in the prevention of Aging? Others people might need your help in Boomer Yearbook.

Ten Tips to Keep you Slim

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

byb-sexy silhouettes-dreamstime_4148986[1]

By BoomerYearbook.com

Whether you’ve decided to get out of the work force or you’re going to reduce the amount of time you spend at work, now, more than ever, is the time that you put more emphasis on your health. Fighting obesity and the many health problems it brings is a matter of priority and discipline, following the tips below may well lead you to the body you’ve always wanted.

1. Eat breakfast. People wanting to stay slim should never skip breakfast, after hours of sleeping at night; your body is forced to fast until you wake up the next morning. Skipping breakfast will eventually make you eat more during the day as you’re body will demand the energy it needs for your daily functions.

2. Exercise. It doesn’t mean that you need to put on your cross trainers and hit the gym, although, it is an option. But what if you’re not the type of person who goes to the gym? A simple brisk walk in the park or a few rounds around the block is enough for you to break a sweat and burn those calories. You may also consider taking dance lessons if you’re up to it. Zumba classes are becoming popular if you like dancing; it is a great way to keep healthy and meet fellow baby boomers.

3. Drink water. Some people mistake thirst for hunger, keeping your water bottle full and within reach will ensure that you make no mistake between the two.

4. Eat more frequently. Eating more frequently in smaller portions, instead of eating three big meals a day, eat in-between meals. It doesn’t only quash your craving for the heavily salted, oil-drenched alternatives, expecting to eat in-between meals will make you plan what you eat during the day.

5. Stop eating. Your brain will tell you that you are full 15 to 20 minutes after you have been satiated, so before you order that extra helping of desert, wait for some time after a course meal. Doing this will help you avert eating an extra 100 to 300 calories in a meal. It may seem wasteful, but food on your plate does not have to be finished when you are full. Don’t overindulge.

6. Plan. When you shop, try to plan your meals beforehand. To save you trips to the market, plan for a week of food and store them properly in the fridge. This may entail buying fruits and vegetables that are just not ready yet until after a few days, this way you won’t waste them when they wilt or become overripe. This will also avoid you going for high calorie food when you are craving.

7. Have your cake and eat it too. You can eat something that you are really craving for like ice cream or cake just as long as you cut down on other things in your meal plan, like cutting down on the sugar on your tea or coffee or reducing your serving of pasta. Substitute.

8. Don’t diet. Stick to a meal plan that is a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat. Most people diet only to figure out later that they’ve gained it back after a few weeks. This leads to a yoyo effect on their weight.

9. Start your meals with a salad. Salads compose of greens will help you cut back by as much as 12% on your calorie intake. And as greens make you feel full faster, it will help cut down on you overall food intake.

10. Use spices. Spices are filled with enzymes that speed up metabolism. So next time you shop for food, be sure to include peppers and spicy sauces in your grocery list and make them readily available in the kitchen either during cooking or meals.

Whatever your choices may be and whatever weight loss goals you have, a baby boomer does not have to look far for ways to keep slim and healthy.

Have you tried doing an effective way to lose weight? Let other boomers know about it.

Tee Box Signs

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By Boomeryearbook.com

Shooting for the lowest score is the ideal in golf outings or tournaments. Players may always compete in several ways. Most events include contests like longest drive, most accurate drive and farthest putt. In these areas, golfers aren’t awarded for their best shots from all 18 holes rather on how well they do at particular holes. Thus, even the not-so-good player can take home the best prizes with just one lucky swing and that’s what makes golf outings an interesting and one of a kind competition.

What are Tee box signs?

These are signs that notify golfers whether they have or haven’t reached the contested holes. They have the prerogative on swinging a little harder if aiming for the longest drive. But golfers must always know the yardage of their drives in order to gauge how far they will hit the ball so as to win the prizes.

Sign Graphics and Advertisements

Many people enjoy golf because of the exciting fact that it is an outdoor sport. The verdure of golf courses gives a picture of peacefulness and provides an essence of being free from stress. Hence, tee box signs shouldn’t be a monstrosity. It should be placed in tee boxes that often contain images of famous golf courses as this generally steals the participant’s attention.

There are so many companies that are willing to pay just to have their emblems posted on these signs, which are placed on courses all over United States. In effect, golf courses won’t have a hard time in finding very affordable tee box signs.

The Naked Dream

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

byb-naked-silhouette-dreamstime_4569748[1]

By BoomerYearbook.com

The naked dream is one of the most common dreams reported. Generally, the dreamer is not aware that he or she is naked at first, but then suddenly becomes aware and is mortified. In other cases though, the dreamer is aware of his or her nakedness, but others are not. In still other cases, no one is aware of the dreamer’s nakedness-not even the dreamer. It seems completely natural.

Often the naked dream is experienced right before some big event when the pressure is on. The most common event reported is some kind of presentation. If a student has to make an oral presentation in front of the class or if a worker has to make a presentation to his boss or executives at work then the naked dreams may start as the event draws nearer. Usually, they symbolize a fear of failing or making a fool of oneself somehow during the presentation. It could also symbolize a fear of being unprepared or not prepared enough.

Naked dreams can also symbolize the fear of being uncovered or discovered. If a person is hiding something about themselves (something that makes him or her feel vulnerable) then that person might dream of being exposed in front of a crowd. This is a big societal taboo, and therefore, a subject to be feared. It would be an extremely humiliating experience were it to occur for real. Perhaps this is why some experts believe that it symbolizes the fear of having some secret exposed.

The last interpretation that has been reported is one of having a fear of being caught off guard in some way. Maybe the dreamer is feeling that his or her life is spinning out of control somehow or that some aspect of his or her life may hold unwanted surprises in the near future. While the first two interpretations are more common and more realistic, there is no one theory that resonates to every individual’s unconscious mind during the process of interpreting subjective reality.

Lucid Dreams

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

byb-sleeping-dreamstime_8466262[1]

By BoomerYearbook.com

A lucid dreamer is one who is aware that he or she is dreaming. If you are aware when you are dreaming then you are able to control the events of your dream. For instance, if you are having – perhaps the most common dream of all – a chase dream, you can choose not to run or to turn around and see who it is that is chasing you. According to some researchers, only a small percentage of people report having lucid dreams. However, according to others, we can learn to become lucid dreamers if we want to.

Researchers say that if you write down your dream immediately after you wake up before it begins to fade, you will have better recall of it. If you do this every time you wake up recalling a dream, you will begin to remember on your own without having to write them down. It will become a more common occurrence. Now, once you are remembering your dreams after you have them you can begin to actually be aware that you are dreaming as you are dreaming.

Some authors do not believe that it is possible to intentionally and consciously become a lucid dreamer. While many of us have experienced lucid dreams once or twice when we recall that we are ‘overseeing’ our dreaming state, oftentimes this causes us to awaken with a strange, uneasy feeling, wondering whether we’re truly dreaming or having some sort of deeply hypnotic daydream. Other researchers have theorized that once you start to control your dream, in essence, your conscious mind is taking over your unconscious mind. Maybe that is why some lucid dreams awaken us. Another theory is that the REM cycle was nearly over and it was near the time to be waking, and thus the dreamer appears to have control over the dream state as the semi-consciousness was mingling with the unconscious world.

But the verdict on lucid dreaming is still out. If you feel the desire to try to become a lucid dreamer, go for it. See what may come of it.

And please come join your dreaming friends at http://www.boomeryearbook.com and share your journey and experiences.

Anger Management

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By Boomeryearbook.com

byb-angry man-dreamstime_11332059[1]

Do you ever punish yourself for someone else’s wrong doing? Is harming yourself a natural reaction to people’s incompetence, ungratefulness or annoying habits? Are you extremely careless about your health? Do these questions sound ill logical? Perhaps they do, but they illustrate how people behave when angry.

Though anger is a natural human reaction, when uncontrolled, frequent anger is a cause of concern. If you get irritated easily, get involved in heated arguments often, lose your temper at the slightest provocation, then anger is a problem you need to deal with.

How to Manage your Anger

Acknowledge your problem

Most of us with anger management issues do not even realize or acknowledge that we have a problem. Admitting you have a problem is the first major step in solving it.

Understand how poisonous and futile anger is

All of us go to a doctor when sick. We don’t deliberately go and consume toxic substances. We try to take care of our health. We watch movies, read books or do something or the other to get rid of stress. Why? Well, because we are rational human beings and we value our lives. Isn’t it strange then, that we forget rationality and our love for our lives the moment we get angry?!

High blood pressure, insomnia, depression, anxiety, increased risk of heart attacks; anger has the potential to bring all these diseases into our precious lives. In fact some research studies also suggest that prolonged anger can actually lower the body’s natural immunity, thereby making it more susceptible to diseases. Isn’t it surprising then that we don’t view anger as a poisonous substance?

Anger is our reaction to certain stimuli. It could be a situation or a person. We get angry when a colleague/team member is inefficient, or at the annoying habits of other people, or when things don’t go our way. We can even get angry with day to day life routines.

Think of every time you’ve been angry at someone or about something, then ask yourself, did it do you any good? Did your anger get you the assignment you wanted? Did you manage to change someone’s annoying habits by getting angry? Did someone suddenly stop driving like a lunatic because you screamed at them? See how futile anger is? It is not only non-productive; it also harms your body and mind.

Tips and tricks to manage anger

Sometimes, no matter how much we try and control ourselves we can’t help but get angry. Here are certain anger management techniques that can help you in such situations:

*Lock yourself in a room and hit a pillow for as long as you want. This will help you let out some steam. Once you are a little calmer, remember how being angry affects you and how the only person you are harming with this anger, is yourself. With time you’ll observe that following this routine will help you control your anger.

*Sit by yourself and deep breathe and imagine that with every out breath you are exhaling your anger. It is simple and effective and if done persistently, it can have an amazingly calming effect.

Additionally, here are some other techniques to help build up anger resistance:

*Take up an aggressive sport- If you are naturally aggressive or have a lot of pent up anger within you, taking up a sport like kickboxing, football or tennis etc can be extremely therapeutic.

*Exercise regularly. During exercise the brain releases chemicals called endorphins, which induce a natural feeling of euphoria. Moreover exercise also helps in letting out steam or built up anger.

*Meditate. Meditating brings you in touch with your subconscious, the exercise lets you spend time with yourself, so that you can reflect and understand yourself better.

All these tips should be able to help you manage your anger; however, if your issues are deep rooted such as childhood trauma, abuse, or death of a loved one, you might have to undergo psychological counseling.

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

byb-exercise-silhouette-dreamstime_10978874[1]

By Boomeryearbook.com

When you engage yourself in a fitness program, make sure to comply with the specifications. An unusual spawn of the fitness movement “is compulsive over exercisers”, says The Toronto Stars. According to reports, over exercising afflicts both men and women. Men may over exercise to recapture youth, while women over exercise are usually poor body image and eating disorders. It is wise to consider the dos and don’ts when starting a fitness plan. Below are some helpful tips:

Do’s

· Write down your fitness goals.
· Assess your current fitness level before starting an exercise program.
· Eat a well balanced diet, this includes and ample servings of fruits and vegetables.
· Supplement your diet with essential fatty acids.
· Choose frozen fruit over ice cream.
· Always stretch before and after your exercise routine.

Don’ts

· Over-train. Your body needs time to recover in between workouts.
· Skip breakfast. Eating breakfast will jump start your metabolism and provide you with the energy you need to get through the day.
· Skip stretching.
· Skimp on sleep.
· Compare your success and failure to others.
· Work out randomly.
· Give up. Consider talking with a friend in times of discouragement.

If you are in your 20s to 30s, complying with the above mentioned tips would be easier because of the greater positive response of your body, while if you are in your 40s to 60’s, and the baby boomer signs start to show up – weakening of knees and waist pains, you might likely enjoy the alternatives such as walking or jogging. This will not only contribute in keeping your youthful physique but it can also help you live a healthy life!
