Gone are the days when a person can eat a scoop of ice cream where the jiggling effects to our behind go unnoticed. Metabolism plays an important role in keeping the body in shape. Unfortunately so, as a person loses his youth so does his speedy metabolism. Metabolic rate slows down with age; the only way to combat the continuous increase in girth is some lifestyle modification.

·Eat right. You are what you eat. Eating the right food can make or break a day’s worth of activities. Energy giving foods packed with the essential nutrients is beneficial to anybody young or old. When shopping for foods try to get as much greens into your daily diet. Head out to your local farmers’ market and get your helping of fruits and vegetables. Try to avoid salty and fatty foods as much as possible, processed foods have often lost some of the nutrients compared to its fresh counterparts minus the preservatives and flavourings normally added to these foods to make it palatable. Try to plan your meals when you do your shopping. Shop for a week load of fruits and vegetables, this way you avoid eating straight from a can or foil. You’ll be snacking healthier before you can say “double cheese burger with large fries.”

·Physical activity. Maintaining physical activity as a person age is required to keeping the blood flowing in the veins, a sedentary lifestyle will not only weaken the body but the mind as well. Try to keep yourself busy with a hobby or sport you once longed to do. Now is the best time to indulge yourself in these activities now that you have the time. Brisk walking is not so hard to do, take your dog for a walk and spend an afternoon in a park or beach. Keeping an active mind is proven to decrease the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

·Sleep properly. Having a good nights’ sleep will help the body repair and get rid of the toxins accumulated during the day. You will also be more energetic and alert with a restful sleep.

·Check-ups. Early detection will lead to early cure, the sooner we know there are concerns we have with our health, the better. The most effective treatment can be adjudged to us the earlier the sooner we know of any concerns. Visit and have a talk with your doctor if something is bothering you. It is better to be careful than sorry.

Ten Tips to Keep you Slim

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

By BoomerYearbook.com

Whether you’ve decided to get out of the work force or you’re going to reduce the amount of time you spend at work, now, more than ever, is the time that you put more emphasis on your health. Fighting obesity and the many health problems it brings is a matter of priority and discipline, following the tips below may well lead you to the body you’ve always wanted.

1. Eat breakfast. People wanting to stay slim should never skip breakfast, after hours of sleeping at night; your body is forced to fast until you wake up the next morning. Skipping breakfast will eventually make you eat more during the day as you’re body will demand the energy it needs for your daily functions.

2. Exercise. It doesn’t mean that you need to put on your cross trainers and hit the gym, although, it is an option. But what if you’re not the type of person who goes to the gym? A simple brisk walk in the park or a few rounds around the block is enough for you to break a sweat and burn those calories. You may also consider taking dance lessons if you’re up to it. Zumba classes are becoming popular if you like dancing; it is a great way to keep healthy and meet fellow baby boomers.

3. Drink water. Some people mistake thirst for hunger, keeping your water bottle full and within reach will ensure that you make no mistake between the two.

4. Eat more frequently. Eating more frequently in smaller portions, instead of eating three big meals a day, eat in-between meals. It doesn’t only quash your craving for the heavily salted, oil-drenched alternatives, expecting to eat in-between meals will make you plan what you eat during the day.

5. Stop eating. Your brain will tell you that you are full 15 to 20 minutes after you have been satiated, so before you order that extra helping of desert, wait for some time after a course meal. Doing this will help you avert eating an extra 100 to 300 calories in a meal. It may seem wasteful, but food on your plate does not have to be finished when you are full. Don’t overindulge.

6. Plan. When you shop, try to plan your meals beforehand. To save you trips to the market, plan for a week of food and store them properly in the fridge. This may entail buying fruits and vegetables that are just not ready yet until after a few days, this way you won’t waste them when they wilt or become overripe. This will also avoid you going for high calorie food when you are craving.

7. Have your cake and eat it too. You can eat something that you are really craving for like ice cream or cake just as long as you cut down on other things in your meal plan, like cutting down on the sugar on your tea or coffee or reducing your serving of pasta. Substitute.

8. Don’t diet. Stick to a meal plan that is a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat. Most people diet only to figure out later that they’ve gained it back after a few weeks. This leads to a yoyo effect on their weight.

9. Start your meals with a salad. Salads compose of greens will help you cut back by as much as 12% on your calorie intake. And as greens make you feel full faster, it will help cut down on you overall food intake.

10. Use spices. Spices are filled with enzymes that speed up metabolism. So next time you shop for food, be sure to include peppers and spicy sauces in your grocery list and make them readily available in the kitchen either during cooking or meals.

Whatever your choices may be and whatever weight loss goals you have, a baby boomer does not have to look far for ways to keep slim and healthy.

Have you tried doing an effective way to lose weight? Let other boomers know about it.

Do’s and Don’ts in Exercise

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

byb-exercise-silhouette-dreamstime_10978874[1]

By Boomeryearbook.com

When you engage yourself in a fitness program, make sure to comply with the specifications. An unusual spawn of the fitness movement “is compulsive over exercisers”, says The Toronto Stars. According to reports, over exercising afflicts both men and women. Men may over exercise to recapture youth, while women over exercise are usually poor body image and eating disorders. It is wise to consider the dos and don’ts when starting a fitness plan. Below are some helpful tips:

Do’s

· Write down your fitness goals.
· Assess your current fitness level before starting an exercise program.
· Eat a well balanced diet, this includes and ample servings of fruits and vegetables.
· Supplement your diet with essential fatty acids.
· Choose frozen fruit over ice cream.
· Always stretch before and after your exercise routine.

Don’ts

· Over-train. Your body needs time to recover in between workouts.
· Skip breakfast. Eating breakfast will jump start your metabolism and provide you with the energy you need to get through the day.
· Skip stretching.
· Skimp on sleep.
· Compare your success and failure to others.
· Work out randomly.
· Give up. Consider talking with a friend in times of discouragement.

If you are in your 20s to 30s, complying with the above mentioned tips would be easier because of the greater positive response of your body, while if you are in your 40s to 60’s, and the baby boomer signs start to show up – weakening of knees and waist pains, you might likely enjoy the alternatives such as walking or jogging. This will not only contribute in keeping your youthful physique but it can also help you live a healthy life!

The Concept of Chakras

Friday, November 6th, 2009

By Boomeryearbook.com

Chakras are energy centers along the midline of the body. According to ancient Vedic philosophy, proper functioning of our body and mind depends on these chakras. From the mind’s eye these chakras are seen as spinning wheels or whirling masses of different colors. Our body is said to have seven primary chakras, each denoted with a different color and responsible for sets of mind and body functions. The exact location of each chakra may vary for different people; however the usual locations are within the body, in a straight line. The following is a list of the 7 chakras, their colors, locations and functions:

The root chakra

Location- At the base of the spine

Color- Burnt red; the color of the earth

Associated body parts- The spinal column, bones, teeth, anus, rectum, prostrate gland, blood etc

Associated feelings- Confidence, trust in life, self-esteem

If the chakra is closed the associated body parts may be affected and can lead to negative feelings of low self-esteem, constant fear of being let-down or cheated, lack of confidence etc. When the chakra is overactive it may make a person overconfident, arrogant and materialistic. An over-active chakra also affects the associated body parts adversely.

The sacral chakra

Location- Below the navel, around the genital area

Color – orange, the color of the setting sun

Associated body parts-Pelvic girdle, re-productive organs, kidneys, bladder, sperm, gastric juice, blood etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Sexual desires, sexual attraction and emotions

If this chakra is closed one might experience problems in the associated body parts and/or an aversion to physical intimacy, fear of sexual union and/or suffer from a lack of interest in sex. It may also lead to low-self esteem and an emotional paralysis like situation. An overactive sacral chakra can be the cause of an obsession with sex or sexual addictions and/or malfunctioning of the associated body parts.

The solar-plexus

Location-6 inches above the navel

Color- Bright yellow

Associated body parts- Lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gall bladder and autonomic nervous system

Associated feelings or mental functions- Will power, determination, view of self, self acceptance, respecting others

If the chakra is closed one may display emotions like self-loathing and lack of willpower. In case it is overactive it may make a person disrespectful, self-centered and callous towards others’ feelings. Either way, the associated body parts will be affected adversely.

The heart chakra

Location- Between the breasts

Color- Red, green or pink

Associated body parts- Heart, upper back, lower area of the lungs, blood and blood circulation, skin etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Giving and accepting love, emotional security, forgiveness and kindness

A person with a closed heart chakra could be stingy, insecure bitter and/or emotionally cold. An overactive heart chakra can make people feel unloved and unappreciated; such people may go out of their way to help others but also keep unrealistically high expectations from the recipients of their help and love. They are generally bitter and over-possessive. A malfunctioning heart chakra can cause diseases in the associated body parts.

The Throat chakra

Location- The throat area, above the collar bones

Color- Pale blue or silver

Associated body parts- Neck, throat, jaw, ears, voice, trachea, upper lungs, esophagus, arms etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Self expression, creativity, expressing one’s feelings of love and anger, communication etc

A blocked throat chakra can make a person stifle his/her creativity and self expression; such people are generally poor communicators and may also be too self-critical. A person who is extremely fond of hearing his own voice or doesn’t let other people express their opinions could have an overactive throat chakra. Such people are generally bad listeners and may display arrogance or over-confidence. A malfunctioning throat chakra affects the associated body parts adversely.

The Third-eye

Location- Between the eye brows

Color- Indigo or violet

Associated body parts- face eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, cerebrum, and central nervous system

Associated feelings/mental functions- Creativity, spirituality, connection with inner-self, focus

A closed third eye chakra could lead to creative block. You may feel as if you lack focus and may not be able to concentrate on any task at hand. A person with an overactive third eye chakra is generally organized to the point of being finicky; he/she could be rational to the extent of being cynical and may lack creativity. A malfunctioning of this chakra affects the associated body parts adversely.

The Crown Chakra

Location- Above the crown of the head

Color- Violet or gold

Associated body parts- Cerebrum, pineal gland

Associated feelings/mental functions- High level of consciousness, fulfillment, enlightenment, bliss

People with an open crown chakra are extremely spiritual. All your chakras need to be open for the crown chakra to function normally. Living a superficial life, running away from spiritual truths, prioritizing money and material comforts above love and kindness all indicate towards a malfunctioning of the crown chakra. A completely closed crown chakra could lead to serious problems in the associated body parts.

There are numerous ways to cleanse these chakras, from yoga, crystal therapy and aroma therapy to simple meditation. You can choose the method based on your comfort level and faith.

How to Cleanse Your Chakras Through Meditation?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

by Boomeryearbook.com

According to the ancient Vedic philosophy, the harmonious functioning of our chakras ensures our overall physical and mental well-being. Guided meditation is one of the simplest self-help techniques used for chakra-cleansing. Practicing the following steps once a week can help contribute to your overall health and well being-

Step 1- Lie down or sit in a comfortable position

Step 2- close your eyes and deep breathe

Step 3- Focus on your breathing

Step 4- Imagine that you are taking in light and energy with every in-breath and exhaling all your stress with every out breath

Step5- After a while you’ll start feeling calm and relaxed

Step6- Now imagine a white beam of light entering your body through soles of your feet

Step 7- Let it travel to the base of your spine, feel it circulating in that area and let it dissolve all the blockages from your root chakra. See the blockages as black soot covering your chakra. As the black soot disappears it will reveal your earthy red root chakra. Tell yourself “I am grounded and confident”

Step 8- Let the light now move up towards your sacral chakra, below your navel, around your genital area. Let the light dissolve away all the blockages from this chakra, see it as a whirling orange mass or an orange colored spinning wheel. Tell yourself “I release all my fears and express my desires freely”.

Step 9- See the light clearing your solar-plexus (6 inches above your navel). Let this whirling white light cleanse your bright yellow chakra. Tell yourself “I accept myself the way I am and I respect others for who they are”

Step 10- Let the light now move up towards your heart chakra. Watch it cleanse your chakra, feel the throbbing pink/red/green chakra in the area between your breasts. Tell yourself “I now accept and give love freely”

Step 11- Feel the light move in a circular motion around your throat area. Watch it cleanse your throat chakra; you’ll see a pale blue spinning wheel or blue colored spinning mass of light emerge. Tell yourself “I now express myself freely and without fear”

Step 12- Let the light move to your third eye chakra, the area between your eyebrows. Feel it cleanse your indigo/violet colored chakra. Tell yourself “I am focused, alert and at peace with myself”

Step 12- Let the light finally move up towards the crown of your head. See it move upwards towards the sky. Now silently pray for guidance and request the universe to silence your ego and help you achieve a higher level of consciousness

Step 13- Relax

Step 12- Slowly, open your eyes

This guided meditation technique is a combination of meditation, hypnosis and positive affirmations. In case you feel it will be difficult for you to remember each and every step while meditating, record these steps as instructions to yourself on a tape or cd and play it before you sit down to mediate. Make sure give a time gap of at least 2-3 minutes between each instruction.

A Smile From the Heart

Friday, November 6th, 2009

byb-smile-dreamstime_10033673[1]

By Dr. Karen For Boomeryearbook.com

Does a smile given or received have any effect on others?

One thing we know for sure, when we are giving a smile away it usually means we are in a happy state of mind. When we receive one, no matter what the mood we may be in, it mellows and softens the heart. So what does this mean? It shows that people are connected both directly and indirectly.

There have been numerous studies conducted with respect to the effects of a smile. The researchers involved have been curious to ascertain if one person in a group smiles can it actually stimulate others within that group to smile as well? This is an experiment you can try for yourself. Next time you are on an elevator with several other people, smile at the person next to you and see what happens. Then perhaps smile at someone else as well. This is a great exercise, with great results. In fact, it may bring a smile to your face whenever you think about it.

In many ways, humans are both compassionate and caring. Often we react as per our environment, and not our personalities. Usually an irritable individual finds it a little more difficult to remain in that state when they are with someone who is happy and smiling. Have you ever been in the presence of a person who is smiling and happy and they have done something to make you smile although smiling is the last thing you wanted to do? Research actually shows that your happy friend can increase your chances of being happy by 9%, but that unhappy one can bring you down by 7%. That just shows you the type of effect that other people can have on us. A negative environment will spawn negativity, and a positive environment will do just the opposite.

Another interesting factor is that in order to benefit from another’s happiness you must be close to them in order to have a reaction to their happy emotional energy. Again, you can give this some thought. Think about a friend who is usually always happy and bubbly. You can talk to them on the phone and no matter what; they always make you feel good. You look forward to the time when you can be in their company again because of the way they make you feel. When you are with them, you enjoy their company since they make you smile. So being in close proximity really does strengthen the emotional bond. Exposure to a bright happy smile most certainly is contagious. It is probably adaptive and healthy that human beings can react to other’s emotions so well and so fast.

The Positive Negative Ratio – Looking on the Bright Side

Monday, October 12th, 2009

byb-Positive Psychology-Chart

Psychological Articles by Boomeryearbook.com

Thinking of one’s positive to negative ratio as a scale and making the assessment of positive thinking to be anything above 5.1 might be somewhat negative in itself; an acceptance of the average. The positive ratio is simply a matter of looking on the brighter side of the events happening around you. Baby boomers experiencing loss of a serious nature might be expected to view the situation with some sadness. However, as people inch toward older age, a certain talent for finding the gloomy side of even the best news surfaces in people who might previously have been optimists.

The age thing again! The positive negative ratio is affected by it; just as our faculties for everything else dims with age. Psychological articles from Positive Psychology explore the ability to see the better side of a situation and suggest the element of disappointment is a major factor in someone’s ability to find fault and be unable to find the positive aspect; disappointment in general, that is, in terms of failure. A failure to achieve leads to finding the bad side to other events. A man or a woman who has not managed to attain success in their career might begin to fail in other things as a result, leading to a poor positive negative ratio.

Baby Boomers Guide: Positive and Negative Emotions

Baby Boomers Guide: Positive and Negative Emotions

Widows who have been happily married throughout their adult lives and who suddenly lose their husbands to find they have been left financially unstable are often the victims of an unfavorable positive negative ratio. They see their situation as a disappointment; an unfair reward for putting in a great many years as a loyal wife and mother. The reaction is understandable but the effect of low expectations in daily life can lead to a habitual negative outlook alien to baby boomers.

As in so many situations, much of the solution to repairing a poor positive negative outlook is to recognize there is a problem. People rarely see their own behavior as negative and tend to view their critical and pessimistic views as ‘realistic’ or ‘honest’, or the all time favorite; ‘Saying it like it is…’

The result of spending too much time with someone who has a low positive negative ratio can have a lowering effect on others. Baby boomers in an active social circle will notice someone being ‘pulled down’ by the negative experience of being too much in the company of someone else with a toxic attitude to life. It can be wearing and have the effect of squashing a person with even the most positive outlook.

Psychological articles show us that baby boomers on the whole demonstrate a good positive negative ratio performance; the ability to look on the bright side is far more pronounced than the previous generation. The prospect of a generation of elderly party poopers is therefore, thankfully, unlikely. However, certain individual members of the baby boomer community continue to cast doom and gloom everywhere they go. The trick is to flush them out and cheer them up!

Preventing Health Attacks

Psychological Article on Elderly Problems

By Boomeryearbook.com

A large number of baby boomers in the US suffer from heart diseases. The fact that they are aging does not singly provide sufficient reason for the boomers’ escalating development of this. . A long standing medical belief is that plaque causes heart diseases, however some recent, albeit as yet unreplicated psychological articles, believe this is untrue. In fact, there is a growing body of psychological articles and research that contend that the culprit in heart disease may be problems related to the body’s collagen. Since collagen is the main protein of connective tissue and needed by the body to repair blood vessels, collagen break down is being investigated for its role in heart problems.

1. Stress causes arteries to expand. This is easily seen by facial flushing and redness during episodes of anger or when experiencing any intense emotional reaction. If the arteries expand too frequently psychological articles inform us that the chance increases of their becoming weakened and cracking. These cracked arteries are a threat to the existence of brain tissue as the body requires a good amount of collagen in order to repair these arterial expansions and contractions. Since the body does not typically get collagen from food, then how is it that these cracks are repaired?

According to a growing body of psychological articles, the answer appears to be that the weakening arteries get repaired from a substitute repair mechanism—specifically plaque. Thus, plaque repairs the cracked arteries in order to prevent any further damage and since plaque is found at the site of the collapsed artery, doctors have routinely believed that plaque is responsible for heart attacks. However, new evidence is disputing this long held belief, looking instead at repeated and acute stress causing collagen damage as the real offender in heart attacks.

Stress is a part of everyone’s life and can sometimes be quite healthy. However, if not managed successfully, stress can be noxious, causing many psychological and physiological problems such as coronary artery disease, chest pains, high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as numerous other risk factors that jeopardize health. Stress releases the emission of high levels of stress hormones in the body such as adrenaline and cortisol and can adversely affect blood clotting, seriously threatening and endangering wellbeing.

Stress can result from an emotional or physical change, and is considered one of many dreaded elderly problems. General aches and pains, fatigue, a feeling of helplessness, exhaustion, sweaty palms, racing heart and clenched jaw are indicators of stress; but much more treacherous stress damage is that it causes arteries to weaken and consequently collapse. The human body does not have sufficient natural collagen to repair these damaged arteries and hence uses plaque. Unfortunately however, plaque cannot sufficiently repair the damage and thus it is imperative to find healthy solutions to managing stress.

A growing body of psychological articles and research has ascertained that Vitamin “C”, the body’s necessary precursor to collagen formation, should be added to the diet, beginning at age 30 and continuing for life. Vitamin C is essential for building collagen and a deficiency of Vitamin “C” results in scurvy like diseases which new research is establishing as the real cause of heart problems. At Boomer Yearbook we urge you to investigate the benefits of Vitamin C, to learn healthy strategies for coping with stress, and to keep your booming heart as healthy as possible. We’d also like to encourage you to check out this article on “How to Lower High Blood Pressure” by one of our favorite sites- Mediterranean Book.com

The Health Benefits of Honey and Cinnamon

Pscyhological Articles on Benefits of Honey and Cinnamon

Psychological Articles on Elderly Problems

by Boomeryearbook.com

Honey and cinnamon have a long tradition as herbal remedies for numerous conditions. Honey in particular has been presented in psychological articles as a cure-for-all in many problems like heart disease, arthritis, stomach ailments etc. Additionally, anectodal information in psychological articles has claimed that when used with cinnamon, the combination greatly increases the scope and power of honey. Moreover, recent research in psychological articleshas shown that eating honey in moderate amounts doesn’t increase the probability of getting diabetes. In 1985 the Canadian magazine Weekly World News listed conditions and problems that respond positively to treatment with a combination of honey and cinnamon.

Heart Problems and Arthritis:

The above mentioned psychological article stated that honey and cinnamon both have properties that provide protection from heart problems and arthritis. Honey decreases the amount of hardened cholesterol in arteries thereby reducing the chances of a heart attack, and for those who have suffered a heart attack, if used regularly, it protects from further attacks. One of the elderly problems we face as we grow older is that arteries and veins become weaker, and it has been shown that honey can be revitalizing.

Psychological articles have also informed us that Arthritis has also been shown to significantly improve with regular usage of honey and cinnamon. It is recommended that ideally the honey and cinnamon combination should be taken in a cup of hot water with a half a teaspoon of cinnamon and two of honey. In a study at Copenhagen University, seventy three patients of a total of 200 were cured of their Arthritis while the rest experienced significant relief!

Stomach problems and flu.

Generally stomach problems are helped significantly by honey. Bladder infections respond immediately to honey if mixed with warm water and taken in liquid form as psychological articles have long told of the power of honey to destroy germs in the bladder. The same combination of drinking honey and cinnamon also works well with colds, flu. Psychological articles have advised to use one quarter teaspoon of cinnamon added to the honey to help coughs and blocked sinuses. Honey is also known to work well on stomach ulcers and reduces pain and gas when used with cinnamon and psychological articles as well as folklore has informed us that honey and cinnamon can easily eliminate bad breath.

Immune system and longevity

Psychological articles have stated that both honey and cinnamon have been proven to strengthen the immune system of viral and bacterial infections, and that when taken together the ingredients that have large amounts of natural minerals in the form of vitamins and iron, greatly help white blood cells fight disease, although existing in synthetic form, the combination of elements in honey has a greater effect. Furthermore, psychological articles report that this increased immune response from taking honey and cinnamon also enhances general health as well as longevity. Used in combination with a healthy lifestyle, (daily usage of 3 or 4 times a day) of both ingredients has been recommended to help eliminate many elderly problems, to maintain good health and live a longer life.

Skin problems

Due to its antibiotic properties, honey used in pastes to cover rashes and other skin problems has a relieving and healing effect. Common problems such as pimples, which psychological articles tell us honey can remove from their roots, usually respond particularly well. More serious infections like eczema, ringworm etc. have also been shown to have significant positive effects and sometimes, psychological articles report them as cured.

Weight loss, anti-carcinogenic and fatigue

Psychological articles have documented that fat formation is prevented if one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon mixed into a cup of boiled water is routinely taken before breakfast and before bed, as it helps reduce weight- even in obese people! Furthermore, in some instances, honey and cinnamon have been shown to be an effective anti-cancer remedy resulting partly from their ability to strengthen the immune system as well as their cleansing qualities. Likewise, apathy, fatigue and increases in strength have been reported in psychological articles from the regular usage of honey and cinnamon taken in equal part. Research has shown that a tablespoon of honey sprinkled with powder made from cinnamon is an effective single dosage.

Chilblains

Elderly Problems: Chilblains

Elderly Problems: Chilblains

Psychological Articles on Elderly Problems

By Boomeryearbook.com

According to psychological articles Chilblains is an elderly problem that is caused by exposing the skin to dampness or cold. It is also not exclusively an elderly problem as it can be experienced by young people. Chilblains also show a gender bias in that it is more prevalent in women. What happens is that the small blood vessels beneath the skin become damaged, but without the freezing of tissue as with frost bite, and without any numbness. Chilblains usually does not typically result in any permanent damage, but if left untreated, particularly as an elderly problem, it can do permanent harm.

Symptoms of chilblains are skin redness, itchy skin with inflammation, toe and/or finger skin inflammation, and earlobe inflammation. To treat these symptoms, keep the area warm. As with any itch, avoid scratching it to prevent further skin damage. Use an anti-itch cream to help with the itching. Persons with this elderly problem should avoid exposure to the cold, making especially sure that the hands and feet are kept warm by wearing gloves and warm footwear. Eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise may also help to prevent chilblains.

So what does the elderly problem of chilblains look like? Well, they usually start off as small, itchy patches on the skin that can then turn a dark blue color with increased swelling and pain. They can also look like swollen patches. Dryness of the chilblains causes them to develop cracks, which increases the risk of infection. They most commonly appear on the hands and feet, specifically the fingers and toes, but they may also affect the nose and ears.

For those of you with the all too common elderly problem of smoking, it is highly suggested that you shed that habit for many health related reasons, this one included. Smoking puts a person more at risk for chilblains because it decreases the circulation of blood. If you do find yourself with this painful condition, be sure not to warm the area too quickly and to take preventative measures to keep the area warm. Chilblains may be a recurring condition or may remit if you remove the circulatory stressor such as smoking. For the present, psychological articles and research have not definitely determined why it is chronic is some persons and remits in others.
