The US is Growing Older!

The United States is gradually growing older. Not that it is something we do not know, but in general, the boomers are by far the biggest single generation ever in the United States. All of us are in our fifties and sixties now, and though we do not consider it old, the country’s average is slowly going up. This is naturally a cycle, and will come back down after a few decades.

But why are we talking about the average age of the country here today? Simply because research shows that the average age of a nation acts on the thinking of the whole country, and since they form the largest section of the population, would influence most of the decisions taken there. Since most of us are beyond fifties now, most of the decisions of the country are on the safer side. The general risk taking appetite has gone down. But that’s a good thing too!

But there’s a great side to this aging process. All these years, elderly people were not part of the mainstream community, and they were not accepted easily into all the young hangouts. However, with the boomer generation, that problem does not arise, as we are the generation that has created all these hangouts! The best part about us is that we have the best of both worlds. We have seen the country evolve into what it has, and also are a part of the tremendous technology which is taking this country and the world into the future. So, people who are aged are now better accepted into the society, and once that happens, no one feels old any longer!

So, though the US is growing older, we don’t feel old, do we?

Cosmetic Surgery for Baby Boomers

Should Boomers Go Under the Knife?

Should Boomers Go Under the Knife?

By Boomeryearbook.com

Cosmetic enhancements have come a long way in recent decades and in certain parts of the World, cosmetic intervention is a way of life entered into along with getting glasses or buying a hearing aid. Those who seek the delights of face lifting, breast tightening and tummy tucks are traditionally facing the aging process. Baby boomers tend to join the ranks of the cosmetically enhanced as they approach late middle age.

The temptation to consign flab and flap to the knife is considerable. The main attraction is, of course, the ‘quick fix’ aspect of the arrangement. Baby boomers who have spent a full and enjoyable life are probably wearing the evidence of years of indulgence on their faces and bodies. Some accept the badges of age with pride and a sense of humor but others, perhaps those a little more sensitive and mindful of appearances, opt for enhancement.

Dieting and exercise can get rid of the traces of imperfection but can take a very long time to achieve a lasting effect and perhaps not even then. A quick visit to a reputable plastic surgeon can produce another ten years shelf life, providing the process has been approached sensibly and with realistic targets.

Before approaching cosmetic surgery as an option, however, it is practical to first take an assessment of general health and ask yourself whether you are fit enough to undergo what is principally an unnecessary surgical procedure. Baby boomersresorting to cosmetic surgery are often doing so because they cannot be bothered to make changes naturally.

There are a number of non-aggressive options open to those who are determined to achieve cosmetic enhancement. Botox can be trialed without lasting effects and certainly spa treatments can produce dramatic results over time and include an enormous range of cosmetic preparations to limit the appearance of age. A word of warning though: when considering spray tanning, bear in mind that wrinkles will collect extra tanning solution and you could end up looking worse instead of better.

Before approaching a cosmetic surgeon, do take all the precautions possible to ensure that you consult a reputable surgeon attached to a properly registered clinic with every possible appropriate certification. Some clinics specialize in treating baby boomers and booming seniors and will carry impressive testimonials, so make sure you read them and make careful enquiries.

There is no need to be secretive about making inquiries to have surgery. Even if you do manage to keep your intentions under wraps, the evidence of your operation will become all too apparent – otherwise there is little point in doing it, right?

Finally, approach your surgery with the attitude that you are not younger as a result of cosmetic enhancement but just improved around the edges. There is little point in taking a step that completely alters your appearance but has a detrimental effect on your emotions. Accept that the changes are cosmetic and nothing can remove the years you have lived. Why would anyone want to? Baby boomers tend to have pragmatic outlook and adapt well to circumstances. Cosmetic surgery need not be an exception to this rule.

Generation Gap or Technology Gap?

Are Baby Boomers experiencing a Technology Gap?

Are Baby Boomers experiencing a Technology Gap?

Psychological Article on Elderly Problems of Baby Boomers

By Boomeryearbook.com

The present day technological boom has brought a generational gap between the aging baby boomers and the younger generations. Psychological articles tell us that the techno revolution is in great part responsible for today’s age related generational schism, as technological advances have caused a shift in the communication styles, mores and values of the younger generation. If you are a baby boomer troubled by the setbacks of aging and the inability to manipulate the technology as well as do the young, then you may be a victim of an elderly problem caused by the technology gap. Let’s face it boomers. Many of us haven’t even mastered our multi faceted remote controls and it’s easy to understand why we may be intimidated if we can’t read the letters on our cell phone in order to speed text our bff’s.

Psychological articles have equated the technology gap as being synonymous to the generation gap because elderly boomers find themselves unsettled by the dependence of the younger generation on technological applications found on cell phones, I pods, laptops, and the internet. But, baby boomers, comprising the largest single segment of the population, find being “out of touch” quite uncomfortable, and in some cases, this leads to elderly problems.

Baby Boomers are oftentimes unpleasantly surprised by the ability of the younger generation to comfortably display personal information on the very public internet. What is fun and entertaining for our children and grandkids seems out and out weird to us baby boomers. Using electronic communication and social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Skype and You Tube, the younger generations, unlike most boomers, do indeed seem addicted to these electronic, non human, technological services.

However, it is incorrect to assume that baby boomers are not deriving benefits from these technological advances. In fact boomers are using the internet, but mostly for different purposes than the younger generation. Baby boomers are known to close beneficial online deals, obtain useful information through online searches, benefit from banking and indulge in shopping. And boomers take heart as these activities are effective in minimizing elderly problems, and enriching our lives.

Some boomers fear that since the young are spending maximum hours using their electronic communication gadgets, that they might be comparatively better informed on global or social issues. Psychological articles even suggest that the feeling of being out of step with advanced technology can cause elderly problems of feeling isolated and left out. However, this is one elderly problem that is easy to fix. Boomers simply need to spend a little time availing ourselves of the new technology and realize that it has many benefits to the baby boomer generation.

Similar to the younger generation, technology can fulfill many many boomer needs, such as shopping for better rates and highly rated products, enjoying online banking services, benefiting from knowledgeable, “at hand” internet resources, and using technology to enhance your work skills and performance.

As stated, the internet can also be a great source for Baby Boomers to find effective solutions to elderly problems such as health and fitness tips, online medical and mental health answers, online social clubs, blogs that provide interesting, readily available access to daily social facts and opinions, and online fun and optical illusions and games to ward off senior moments and elderly problems.

So boomers! Let’s bridge the technology gap and get involved in the global community.

Marketing to Baby Boomers

Psychological Article on Elderly Problems

By Boomeryearbook.com

Baby boomers are the largest, most educated and wealthiest consumer group in America. They are the people born between 1946 and 1964. These people have more disposable income than any other group. The best way to entice them into purchasing your product is by providing comprehensive services that are in keeping with the boomers values and preferences. Purchasing motivators and needs change with advancing age and many baby boomers will seek items that promise to overcome elderly problems, and this knowledge can be used to increase marketing efficacy. Psychological articles state that around 25% of the American internet users belong to the baby boomer group and thus effective target research and marketing is essential to success. Below are a few useful tips for marketing to baby boomers.

There is a wide age disparity among baby boomers (from 46 to 65 years of age), and this can be a hindrance for online boomer marketers; as the disparity is usually countered through a categorization of boomers using the varying age demographics for specific product marketing. Therefore, we have two groups i.e., older boomers who were born between 1946 and 1954 with typical age related elderly problems; and younger boomers born between 1955 and 1964. Psychological articles and research has determined that baby boomers of both age groups use the internet not only as a source of connection and entertainment, but also as a tool to gain knowledge and seek solutions to the elderly problems they are currently or feel they will shortly be facing. Thus marketing to baby boomers requires a comprehensive understanding of the boomers online behavior and needs.

Psychological articles have informed us that 74 % of baby boomers purchase internet items approximately once a month. Young boomers are more active in online purchasing than are older boomers, with the older boomer market more specifically seeking solutions to elderly problems. It bears repeating that baby boomers have enormous buying potential and psychological articles have cited studies stating that 61% of baby boomers do not adhere to brand loyalty. This attitude provides more opportunities to the present day marketplace as strategic marketing of brands can help obtain greater benefits from targeted boomers.

The first step in establishing a good baby boomer marketing approach is to establish trust. There are a remarkable number of baby boomer consumers who demand a reputable, trust worthy brand, and smart marketers will ensure that their product or service is backed by research or testimonials that stand up to the marketing claims. Word of mouth is important marketing device, as boomer prefer competing brands and in particular, younger boomers like to purchase items that will make them feel “forever young” in the hopes of prolonging the ravages of age and elderly problems.

If your product targets online consumers fighting elderly problems then make your website attractive and appealing. An inviting presentation with large attractive photos, details of product qualities and impressive design is likely to attract both older and younger baby boomers. Also, prominently displaying privacy policy, terms and conditions and all relevant information will help allay the boomers distrust from purchasing on the internet. And one thing is certain. Boomers like to talk to each other. Therefore if some baby boomers are touting a particular product or brand, i.e., the best cream to eradicate the elderly problem of wrinkles, other boomers will definitely search for its details on the internet. The utilitarian attitude of the baby boomers encourage them to use the internet as a resource to accomplish tasks and improve their lives therefore the effective marketer will provide the baby boomers with concise yet useful information.

Exercise for Baby Boomers

Exercise for baby boomers to alleviate elderly problems

Psychological Article on Alleviating Elderly Problems

By Boomeryearbook.com

Ok, so you are an aging baby boomer. Well then, it is exceedingly important to stay fit and healthy; and there’s no need to worry as it’s easy for us baby boomers to look and feel our absolute best. One great way to alleviate the elderly problem of lack of exercise is through the dozens of readily available fitness services. After reviewing psychological articles on the subject, the consensus appears to be that over the age of 50, aging boomers and seniors should concentrate fitness activities on exercises that improve balance, coordination, posture, movement, and flexibility. And the consensus of experts seem to agree that one of the safest ways for aging boomers and seniors to stay fit is through deep water workouts that can help alleviate the elderly problems of being out of shape without stressing joints.

Psychological articles say that many baby boomers prefer low-impact forms of exercises which do not involve high levels of exertion and provide beneficial results without negative effects. Foremost among such activities is walking and swimming or water aerobics. Adhering to an exercise routine is of the utmost importance in both elderly problemsof disease prevention and recovery. Aging boomers and seniors can easily have their lives restricted and marred by back pain, arthritis, poor circulation, heart ailments, diabetes, and orthopedic conditions; hence water exercises are a great solution as they benefit the body without harming joints. Keeping fit and agile can also ensure a speedy recovery from elderly problems of injuries, accidents, and surgeries.

Psychological articles reveal that group activities and sports such as bowling, volleyball, and golf have added benefits in decreasing elderly problems as they provide both physical activity as well as socialization outlets. Another baby boomer favorite that is great for keeping fit are cardiovascular workouts which help burn fat and keep the heart strong and healthy. Maintaining a healthy weight through cardiovascular workouts will help decrease manyelderly problems by lowering cholesterol and cleaning the body of unhealthy arterial plaque.

Strength training is another baby boomer and senior fitness must, as it builds muscle mass and improves bones, thus reducing the elderly problems of osteoporosis. Here are a few exercise tips from which baby boomers and seniors can benefit:

1. First, always remember to seek the advice of your health care practitioner before beginning any exercise program.
2. Always warm up and stretch before working out as cold muscles can be easily injured causing other elderly problems.
3. Keep a regular exercise time, and don’t overdo it. Remember that baby boomers and seniors can benefit from simple routines such as walking a dog, working in the garden, or parking the car far from the supermarket and walking to the store.
4. Purchase good exercise equipment, and before embarking on a new sport, take a lesson. Proper training or lessons prevent the chances of injuries, stress fractures and other potential elderly problems. This includes replacing worn out treads, sneakers or other old equipment.
5. Aging and elderly problems reduce agility and flexibility. Therefore it is best to modify physical activity to accommodate the specific needs of your body.
6. Always graduallyincrease the level of your physical activity. A good rule of thumb is to increase intensity approximately 10% per week to prevent injuries and other elderly problems., and add new exercises carefully.
7. Have a balanced fitness program with multiple exercises meeting the needs of your body.

Physical fitness is essential to prevent and fight against elderly problems, therefore investing in an effective fitness program can provide great benefits for baby boomers and booming seniors.

The Sport of Ballroom Dancing

Psychological Articles: The Sport of Ballroom Dance

By Boomeryearbook.com

The baby boomer generation has been looked up to as a generation that never shied away from trying out new things and finding new ways to have fun. Ballroom dancing is no exception. It has been universally recognized that ballroom dancing is great recreation, fantastic exercise, and a terrific way to develop self-confidence and hone social skills. Keeping all this in mind Boomer Yearbook did some research for the benefit of the baby boomer generation and put together this psychological article on the history of ballroom dancing as well as some of the most common rules. We hope you Enjoy!

Ballroom dancing was first introduced in the 18th century and its origins can be traced back to England where ballroom dancing was performed by the elite and upper strata of society, in social gatherings and at balls. During the late 19th century it became trendy among the working and middle class who held ballroom dances in public dance halls. Like other dance forms, while ballroom dances have recognizable steps, they are also vehicles of expressing feelings, thoughts and emotions.

History of Ballroom Dancing

Historically ballroom dancing referred to any form of formal social dancing performed as a way of recreation. However in modern times, as the baby boomer generation may well be aware, ballroom dancing, with the advent of dance as a sport, has become narrower in scope.

Interestingly for the baby boomer generation, psychological articles have revealed that the oldest forms of ballroom dancing probably had their roots in camp fire rituals, spiritual ceremonies and fertility rites.

The modern closed couple position of the Viennese Waltz was first invented in the 1700s, (and spread to England in the 1800’s), at the same time as which the Polka and Tango gained popularity and evolved in other parts of Europe.

Ballroom dancing hit America in the early 1900s, incorporating variations such as the Foxtrot, Swing and Quickstep, shortly followed by Cuban, Caribbean and Latin influences of Rumba, Samba, Mambo and Cha Cha Cha.

Modern Ballroom Dancing

Today ballroom dancing has transformed from a social activity to a competitive sport. The modern ballroom dances have been categorized and standardized. This dance style now follows internationally agreed upon terms, techniques, rhythms and tempos.

There are five different steps which are danced in ballroom dancing events. They are diverse in origin but are all danced by a couple i.e. a man and a woman in a ‘Closed Hold.’

The Ballroom Dance Hold

Conventionally the man takes the lead and the lady follows. There are 5 contact points which are to be maintained throughout the dance.
• The man’s left hand hold lady’s right hand.
• The lady’s left hand rests on top of the right arm of the male partner with Tango being an exception and the lady’s left hand resting behind the male partner’s arm.
• The man’s right hand is positioned on the lady’s left shoulder.
• The lady’s left elbow is placed at the man’s right elbow.
• The chest of both partners touch on the right side.

1. Modern Waltz:
A sedate version of Viennese Waltz that has characteristic turns and dips. It’s danced with couples face to face, with arms on each other’s shoulders and hips.

2. Tango:
It’s a light spirited Flamenco originally from Spain. Its emphasis is on leg movements, proud torso and sharp leg movements that have a staccato action.

3. Viennese Waltz:
A dance performed to music with 3 beats to the bar. Today it’s danced to a tempo of 180 beats per minute.

4. Slow Foxtrot:
A more romantic Foxtrot performed to a 4/4 rhythm of about 120 beats/minute tempo.

Dances have been an integral part of human civilization; and the baby boomer generation have reveled in Ballroom Dancing as a form of recreation and socialization. Psychological articles tell us that Ballroom dancing develops self esteem and an overall positive attitude. Ballroom dancing can teach us the important trick of keeping our feet grounded while holding our heads high. And isn’t that what we baby boomers do best?

The Benefits of Dogs for the Elderly

Psychological Articles:Resolving Elderly Problems with Dogs

by Boomeryearbook.com

The human-dog connection is a centuries old bond. There’s nothing like a sweet, attentive, loving dog to make you forget about day to day stresses as well as life’s major traumatic events. Psychological articles affirm that having contact with a responsive animal can do wonders for our physical and emotional well being.

Numerouspsychological articles have reported that as we age contact between people and their dogs can have even more beneficial effects; especially in resolving the elderly problem of loneliness. Too often, the elderly tend to lead isolated lives, and having a four legged, loving companion can provide a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and constancy that can help shield against the elderly problem of depression. Psychological articles have observed that dog owning aging baby boomers and seniors cope with daily activities better than their non-pet-owning friends.

Feel Good Effect

Psychological articles have stated that walking your dog and other routine caring tasks helps resolve the elderly problems of getting much needed exercise as well as alleviating loneliness and satisfying the craving for companionship. Simply playing with your dog raises both serotonin and dopamine levels-the brain nerve transmitters known to give calming and increased pleasurable sensations. Just think about this. People take heroin and cocaine to attempt to stimulate brain serotonin and dopamine levels, and this “artificial drug induced high” can be healthily achieved by getting a pet dog!

Alzheimer

Studies indicate that Alzheimer’s patients show lower stress levels and fewer anxious outbursts if there is a dog in the household. According to psychological articles, the mere presence of a dog can ease the effects of the disease.

AIDS

Hard as it is to admit, as a rule, the general public is not totally unbiased and empathic to AIDS patients. However, dogs are! They would give them the same unconditional and unbiased love that they would to a healthy owner. It is observed that AIDS patients who have dogs are far less likely to get depressed as compared to those without pets.

Heart Diseases

Psychological articles and research indicates that heart attack patients who own dogs have better chances of a speedy recovery than those without them. Dogs can feel the symptoms of a heart attack much quicker than any other animal. It is observed that dog owners have lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels. And as stated above, they also encourage the owners to exercise regularly as they need to be taken out for walks.

Anxiety Disorders

In a study conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, a trial therapy session was carried out which involved patients, a trained dog and its handler. The psychological article concluded that the patients who interacted with the trained dog exhibited significant improvements in mood and behavior such as reduction in anxiety levels and lessening of symptoms of dementia.

In a therapeutic program called ‘Project POOCH’, convicts volunteered to train homeless dogs with series behavioral problems. The aim was not only to train the dog but also to inculcate a sense of responsibility and accomplishment among the convicts doing the training. This project has been so successful for both the dogs and the convicts that it is being expanded with the hope that both dogs and convicts will benefit. The dogs are helping to make criminals more useful and functionally rehabilitated and once the dogs are trained, they are freed from shelters and possible death and provided with new, hopefully permanent homes.

Psychological articles show that throughout the world elderly people are being encouraged to keep dogs as the benefits of these friendly pets can not be denied. The benefits of owning a dog extend beyond companionship and pleasure, to the numerous physical and mental health benefits attainable with the help of these magnificent canines.

Psychological Benefits of Owning a Cat

Thursday, March 12th, 2009
Psychological Article on the Benefits of Cats

Psychological Article on the Benefits of Cats

A Psychological Article By Boomeryearbook.com

The world has seen an alarming increase in mental health problems. And psychological articles suggest one possible reason for this Global Health scenario could be modern society’s robotic, stressful, super-competitive over ambitious lifestyle.

Psychological articles have reported that worldwide measures are being investigated- by varying organizations and institutions-to gauge the causes and implement initiative programs to tackle emotional health and well being.. And not surprisingly for some of us, (we know who we are), psychological articles have indicated that cat owners show an overall positive personality effect when compared to non-cat owners. Meow!

Just for starters, psychological articles have repeatedly shown that pets provide unconditional love, companionship and acceptability; that leads a person towards being responsible, tender and benevolent. Pet’s increase our self esteem and self efficacy.

And since psychological articles inform us that cats are more childlike, resilient and whimsical in their behavior –by sharing our home with these gorgeous felines- we get the added benefit of learning patience and increased ability to deal with life’s frustrations. Numerous psychological articles and research have confirmed that these remarkable creatures give us privileged owners the a sense of belonging, and feeling needed.

Children With Cats Show More Empathy

Psychological articles show that children who have a pet cat develop an early aged sense of duty and responsibility. The delicious feline is not just an animal for these lucky child cat owners, but a playmate, buddy and confidante. By looking after their adored companion, psychological articles have shown children to light up with delight. Playing with their cat makes a child more relaxed and training their feline buddy (if indeed you can talk about cat training without giggling) makes a child more patient as well as assertive.

Psychological articles have observed that children who have cats, are more popular among their classmates, better understand other people’s body language, and have an easier time comprehending non verbal cues than do their cat-less friends. These lucky children have been rated as scoring higher in overall sense of self worth, importance and connectedness (feeling needed).

Impact of a Cat on an Adult’s Life

Psychological articles and researches have demonstrated that sharing your life with your pet cat has an immensely beneficial affect on reducing mood swings, and can be a constant source of joy and amusement. These psychological articles go on to report that even the cat’s purring has a calming affect, and as any of us know, stroking your cat’s fur is remarkable calming and measurably lowers stress levels.

When you walk into a lonely apartment your cat’s welcoming meow gives you a feeling that somebody is waiting and happy to see you home. Psychological articles go as far as to claim that a cat can be your key to fight off depression and loneliness. And today, many nursing homes, (of non allergic residents) enjoy the company of pet cats as a “‘therapy animal, who with its mere presence can promote positive group and family interaction.

Health Benefits that Lead to Emotional Well Being

Psychological articles reviewing world wide studies show that one can even increase immunity levels by owning these marvelous creatures; and if brought into the home during the infancy stage, cats have been shown to reduce the risk of having animal allergies-asthma!

Additionally, children with pet cats have 13-18% less poor health and incur less “illness” related school absences.

Another study done in China shows that people who own cats visit hospitals 20% less than those who don’t; with elderly cat owners demonstrating lower ranges of normal blood pressure. The mere stroking of a cat can decrease triglycerides levels thus reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Prisoner’s Rehab Program in Switzerland

In Switzerland, at Saxerriet State prison, a Cat rehab program for the prisoners was introduced. A group of volunteer prisoner’s were given cats to look after, and told to follow a strict set of instructions regarding proper cat care and well being.

The study concluded that the prisoners who looked after their cats well were more responsive to other psychological treatments. The cats provided them a chance to be empathic and responsible. Moreover, this psychological article affirms that the prisoners felt they were given irreplaceable, unconditional acceptance from their cat-something they said was missing in other parts of their lives. It is common psychological theory that many offenders have a history of being unloved, and the giving and receiving of their cat’s unconditional love is enhancing their chances of evolving into a better person.

To sum it up your cat could be the most important being in your life. It simply has to stare at you with its wise feline eyes-to let you know “you’ll be alright.” You can talk to it, snuggle it, stroke, and cuddle. Your cat is there for you when many of your friends are not. Ah, but this little furry bundle can also be naughty and mischievous, but as all of us cat lovers know, this only makes them more endearing.

Elderly Problems: Natural Treatments for Constipation

Elderly Problems: Healthy Foods to Relieve Constipation

Elderly Problems: Healthy Foods to Relieve Constipation

By Boomeryearbook.com

While constipation has troubled all of us at some point or another, to the aging baby boomers generation, it might seem like a chronic problem. Though there are variable causes, most commonly it is due to poor life style choices such as unhealthy eating habits, inadequate exercise, not getting enough fiber and not drinking enough water.

There are a number of natural remedies that the baby boomers generation should consider, the key ones being:

Exercise

Constipation is caused mostly by lack of physical activity, one of the elderly problems that the baby boomers generation has to face as we age. Any type of regular exercise, especially walking, is a great natural remedy for constipation. Exercise keeps the heart in shape which has the additional benefit of stimulating the bowels as movement encourages the passage of food through the intestine.

Eating right

An all natural food diet is a recommended life style choice for the aging baby boomers generation. It’s a matter of digestibility. If your intake consists of natural food products then your body will know how to digest it. Processed food and refined sugars and chemicals are hard for your body to digest, and can cause constipation. Many processed food ingredients just gets stored as waste and weakens the overall system. We boomers should know this by now but it bears repeating. Stick to the natural and stay away from processed.

Water

The all rounder for over all good health; Water is also one of the best cures for constipation. 8 glasses a day is highly recommended.
Fiber
One of the most effective remedies that the aging baby boomers generation can adopt is to increase fiber intake. Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and having them as juices is especially effective because they become easily absorbable. Some of the best fiber providers, and also great natural remedies for constipation are:

• prunes
• dried beans
• raisins
• popcorn
• figs
• pears
• oatmeal
• nuts

Herbal remedies

The best cures for constipation are listed above, however if additional help is needed, there are herbal remedies that have laxative properties and are much better than the harsh laxatives that are found in stores. Amongst these are aloe juice, senna, cascara sagrada, medicinal rhubarb, root of dandelion and plaintain seeds. As with everything, overuse can be harmful so be cautious and follow proper directions.

Try to de- stress

It has been shown that relieving tension is a remedy for constipation. Relaxation loosens the bowels so do whatever helps calm you down; books, music, or yoga.

Medication

Because of the elderly problems they face most of the aging baby boomers generation is on some sort of medication. Many medications can aggravate and even cause constipation. Antacids for example, contain calcium or aluminum which can cause constipation. Antihistamines and medication for Parkinson’s can also be a cause for constipation amongst elderly patients. Diuretics are widely known to cause constipation as are the following:

• calcium supplements,
• narcotics,
• phenothazines,
• tricyclic antidepressant medications
• sedatives

We at Boomer Yearbook are aware that constipation can be a chronic problem amongst our aging retirement baby boomers generation. These natural remedies should go a long ways towards eliminating (no pun intended) this elderly problem.

By Boomeryearbook.com

Arthritis is one of the elderly problems that a lot of our retirement boomers are familiar with. However, arthritis isn’t restricted to our species alone; our pets suffer from it to.

Like us, our pets are living a lot longer, and because of their extended life span there are more pet related elderly problems. Psychological articles and research have reported that if they live long enough, all mammals develop arthritis. However, because of the multiple ways that symptoms can be shown, a lot of the retirement boomers may not even be aware of their pet’s condition. However the situation can be easily attended to by monitoring pets carefully and getting regular vet checkups.
Basically arthritis is a chronic, slow progressing disease that is caused by the breakdown of cartilage in your pet’s body. As that occurs, bones begin to rub against one another resulting in pain and discomfort. There are numerous causes for arthritis, the most common being: genetic malformation of bone structure, trauma or infection to joint surfaces, torn supporting ligaments or tendons, poor nutrition, being over weight and auto-immune conditions.
Treatments vary, but here is a list of possibilities that our retirement boomers can consider:

The Holistic Approach

The holistic approach is simple- take care of the overall health of your pet, and not just the arthritis. Exercise is a must and do not let your pet become overweight. A fat pet is the owner’s, not the pet’s fault.

Non Steroidal Anti- Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs stop pain by inhibiting inflammation in the joints. However, retirement boomers should make sure that their pet is properly monitored by a veterinarian because this drug has some serious side-effects such as:
• kidney related diseases
• gastric ulceration, and
• bleeding.

Disease Modifying Osteoarthritic Agents:
DMOAAs are an attempt by doctors to use added drugs which are natural and help in curing or relieving symptoms of arthritis. They have two categories called Nutraceuticals and Chondroprotectants. So far DMOAAs have not been found to have any side effects and increased research is showing that they are as effective as NSAIDs. Also when used in combination with NSAIDs they decrease the amount of NSAIDs required to relieve pain. They basically work by rebuilding cartilage, providing vital nutrients and decreasing inflammation which causes discomfort to our pets.

Glucosamine Sulfate & Glucosamine HCL

Dietary supplements are often recommended for pet related arthritis treatments, and we suggest retirement boomers consider this an option. The substance glucosamine whose common forms are mentioned above, are becoming quite popular amongst pet owners and veterinarians. Basically glucosamine is a type of amino sugar that is involved in the production of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, substances that make up cartilage and inhibit the production of enzymes that degrade them. These compounds reduce the inflammation of joints, regenerate cartilage, and gradually repair the damage caused on cartilage from trauma or infection. Glucosamine is available in capsule form but research shows the liquid form to be much more effective as it is easily absorbed and takes less time to relieve pain than pills. The most popular brand is Synflex Glucosamine, and is a safe and effective choice for your pet.
